How to Re-Fit Rubber Recoil Pad

Hello All,

I have a FAL rubber recoil pad I'd like to slim down. How would I go about removing about 1/2" of thickness? Do I cut it or grind it down? Could I use a hand held belt sander or a bench grinder.

The belt sander would work better. I'd find a way to hold the sander in a vice with the trigger held down. That leaves both hands free to manipulate the buttpad. George
