Most popular ammo cal. during shortage? - Page 2

Where I am, the cartridge caliber for handguns that Wal Mart always seemed to have was 9mm. They spent a solid year without 45, 40, or 380. They had some 38 and 357 from time to time. It wasn't til 3 months ago that I started seeing 45 and 40 caliber. They still don't have 380 (though I don't have any 380s, but I hear the 380 owners complain still when I go in for my fishing stuff). And for rifles, they always had 22 caliber and shotgun (12 and 16 ga) ammo.

had no real problems all rim fires i own HMR 17 and Mach 2 had over 50 box of each (bought when ever there was a good sale by the brick) .... 22 don't shoot that much still have 100 packs of minimags that have price tags of $2.75

pistol and rifle reload my own and have ammo cans full of empty brass had a bit of trouble finding 223 until my buddy at the surplus store said he had a couple pallets of empty saw brass

other wise walmart is still pretty much still stripped and dicks has really jacked the price up

Most common thing I saw was 12 ga shotgun in several types. I was always able to find some kind of ammo if I waited long enough, but I could always get some sort of 12 ga.

At my 2 close by Wal-Marts .22 was last to go. Centerfire pistol..... .40 last to go first to return.

Didn't see 16ga shotgun for 7 months!!!!

Centerfire pistol: 9mm

Centerfire rifle: 7.62x39

.22LR rimfire.

I had no problem ordering plenty of cheap wolf ammo in 7.62 and 9mm.

Around where I live .380 and 9mm were almost impossible to find. The .380 still is unless you want reloaded fmj or aren't picky about which HP you want.

The shortage is by no means over but you can get lucky every so often and find some stuff at Wal-Mart. Bass Pro is still a waste of time for pistol ammo. Dick's has stuff but it's the same price as my gun shop, so I'd much rather give them my money.

In regards to what ammo was readily available during the worst parts if the shortage....

You could build a kiddie fort with all the .40s&w and .357sig that nobody wanted. You could also add a little garage to the kiddie fort with the FN5x7 and a fence with the .25 auto stuff.

40 S&W. Everytime I was in the local Wal-Mart I saw bricks of 40 cal. and nothing else(mabe some 22) but thats it.

Right now the local Wally World has everything but:

.45, .380 and .357 sig. But my Wally World never had .357 Sig or .45 GAP.

The other two places that sell ammo in my home town have everything.

A bunch of ammo at the local farm supply store. Flush with .223, 9mm, .22 - gobs of it.

And ALWAYS Gobs of shotgun loads. Always...

At my local Wally Worlds last year, .357Sig, .44Mag, and small 10/100rnd boxes of .22 were the most prevalent , followed by .40 S&W and maybe .38Special/.357Mag. The hardest calibers to find were .380, .45ACP, and 9mm in that order. Wally Worlds stock seems to have gotten slightly better in some calibers as of late. My local Cabela's had shelves full of ammo when I was in there a couple days ago. Never seen so much ammo before, and I have never seen their prices so high before. The Remington Golden Saber I buy for HD, have gone up 20% the two boxes of 9mm I bought last year were $24.99ea, now $29.99ea.

Somebody, either on this forum or one of the other forums I'm on, gave a reason for the particularly bad shortage of .380. They had talked to a Federal ammo employee and learned that the .380 is produced on the same machines as .45ACP. They were so backed up on .45 (running 24/7) that they could never take time to change the dies over to .380 on those machines. That made the .380 shortage particularly bad.

locally, most wally worlds had plenty of 357 sig, 25 scp, and more 12 guage than you can shake a stick at. I've not seen any WWB 45 that I can remember there. One walmart close by carries Winchester supreme elite in both 45 and 40, and that make me a happy camper.

It was dry for quite a while ... and I mean totally dry. But now our local Cabela's has had it's shelves packed with all calibers for months now. Doesn't look like anyone is hording anymore.

All 5 calibers that I reload. Fortunately I have a good stockpile of supplies all purchased before the madness started so I have not experienced a shortage, THANKFULLY

I had little trouble finding 38 Super on line,although I had a much harder time locally-only one dealer really had any and he sold me all of it.He didn't get any demand for it.
When I found it on line,it was $18-$ 21 per box of 50-I dealt with the no shipping charge people whenever I could.Ammoman and Graf.Graf charges a nominal handling charge.
This was for factory ammo.I bought a few thousand plus rounds because I like to shoot it a lot.I also carry it for SD and use it for HD.
A very underrated round.Goes where you point it too

I can tell you that factory new Match 9MM ammo is definitely not in short supply. I've been sitting on hundreds rounds of 115 FMJ and JHP match ammo from a barter deal a year ago and takers are slim. The stuff I got is apparently made by contract to the Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning by Atlanta Arms & Ammo. It is supposed to be the best stuff you can shoot in a Berretta for service pistol and bullseye competitions. Man, I'll sell it at 10% off market just to get rid of it.
