Mosin Nagant and scope for hunting?

I am looking for a good hunting rifle compatible with a scope. I am thinking about getting a Mosin Nagant for the job. My question is,
first, does the Mosin Nagant make a good deer hunting rifle?
Second, is the Mosin Nagant compatible with a scope? I want to keep the wood stock and not "modernize" it with a plastic stock.
Third, can anyone reccommend a good scope, within about $50.00 for the Mosin?

I am currently using an SKS with an open sight to hunt, but don't feel very confident with my accuracy and to be fair for the deer I want to know I can hit what I am aiming at.

Thanks a lot!

I hunt with mine

I have one of the long Mosins and have a scope mount put on it by a gunsmith. The mount fixes to the left side of the receiver just next to the opening port. I have a Buschnel 3x9. I picked up some 180gr Czech made soft points, I can group 2" with these at 100 yards, certainly acceptable for deer hunting out to 200. I took a 4 point buck with it back in 1998.

I'd recommend the Mosin for deer hunting. If you handload, there are worlds of possibilities open as far as making hunting rounds. But, there are few deer that can withstand a 2700 fps 180gr soft point, so I'm sure you'll be ok even with factory rounds.

Funny thing, I haven't shopped for hunting rounds for that gun in 10+ years but I bet there are many options now.

Mosin can be a fine deer rifle!

The 7.62X54R has ballistics that are very close to those of the .308 Winchester. You should be able to take anything with your Mosin Nagant that one would do with the .308 with similar sights.

I helped a friend get set up with a slightly "no gunsmithing required" scout sight and mount:

the BSA Optics page for the same scope:

http://www.bsaoptics.com/scope.aspx?productID=311

The mount: http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2...N_NAGANT_MOUNT

Worked great except for our inability to drift one of the rear-sight pins out. Sent rifle to a properly equipped gunsmith and for well under $100 he has a fine-looking scope-sighted Mosin Nagant!

Here's one that's already set up for you.

For deer hunting it will do nicely, however if it were me I would consider maybe a Savage or Remington package already set up at the big box store.
