9mm recipie won´t make MINOR
Using Lee 356-124-2R, Win SP, 4.0 gr. W 231, Mixed brass1.10" OAL, but I cant get them over 960 fps average, thus I cant make it in to MINOR. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Other powder (I have no idea what the max for W231 is), perhaps other bullet needed (jacketed). My 124 gr FMJ's does around 1220 fps using 5.5gr N340. If I want harder loads I would go with 3N37 or SP2. All euro powders (VV and Vectan). I haven't loaded any lead in 9mm, but I'm sure there's others around that have, maybe even using US powders.

That's pretty fancy, Mikke!
N340 data as listed in VV's load guide: 124gr FMJ/FP Hornady, 1.142" COL, 4" bbl 5.3gr - 1139fps to 5.7gr - 1214fps To get 1220fps from 5.5gr, you must be shooting a carbine?

Try some IMR SR 4756. Check the IMR booklets of 1990 vintage for the data.

Where was this same thread that I responded to yesterday? You have room to increase the charge of 231. I have two sources that show 5.0 grains with 124/125 grain bullets seated at 1.160 OAL.

Unfortunaltely my load data with cronograph figures is some 200 miles away, I might only get 1200 fps with 5.5gr, I used to use 5.6gr but backed down just a tad to have a little more margin when loading with the progressive. I might add that you can't treat velocities given with load data as gospel, there's usually too many variables that can differ that IMO they are only good for giving a comparison figure (and if you're getting way higher or lower velocities that the given, something might be wrong with your loads, a difference of 20-30 fps is not that big difference, again IMO). some familiarity with the Nine
I might suggest Alliant Power Pistol as a more appropriate choice.
Sort your cases by brand. If using W231 suggest working up; try 4.5g. Does that bullet force an OAL of 1.1"?

Back home again, checked some old cronograph data, and in february 2004 I got a solid 1210 fps average with a 124gr FMJ driven by 5.5gr N340. February in northern Sweden means snow, and usually at least a couple of degrees below freezing.
I also found a note on a 5.4gr N340 with a Fed 200 primer (small pistol mag) behind a Rem 124gr FMJ that did 378,6 m/s (1242 fps), this was shot over the cronograph in mid march (still snow and cold here ). |

Go ahead and make those 9mm loads a little stiff.
I've been brewing-up 9mm loads with a 122-125 power factor for Bianci Cup/NRA Action Shooting rules for some time now. Mostly I've use W231 without complaint...I said without complaint; but....lately I tried some euro brassplated steel cased, FMJ bullet, cartridges...I ain't worried too much about power factors anymore with 9mm anything.
9mm pistols loaded with service type ammo handle great. Unlike 45s, 44s, .357s, the 9mm pistol settles-down real nice under recoil without the need to reduce the load. Light loaded 9mm makes the gun(s) sluggish. Glock-Sig-XD-CZ-1911...all of them. Don't be afraid . Win White Box, Federal Red, Remington Green, all...all...will go into IDPA Max scoring ring at 35 yard with a above mentioned servicable pistols when you keep-up your end. |
