S&W model 10 revovler

I have a Model 10 S&W revovler with a 4" barrel.

Could someone give me some information on when these type of revovlers were made?

I tried the S&W website and they never responded.

If it is marked Model 10, it was produced after 1958. Before that it was the Military and Police model. Production of the basic gun began in 1899 and AFAIK, it is still made.

The 4-inch barrel is a standard barrel length and has been available throughout production. Last I heard, it is currently the only barrel length offered. More information will require more detail. For example, are there four screws on the sideplate (one may be covered by the grip) or three. Is there a screw in the front of the trigger guard? Is there an engineering change number after the Model 10, such as 10-2?

I see three screws. There is one on the front of the grip, on above the trigger gaurd, beneath the cylinder. And one where the rear of the trigger guard meets the rest of the gun.

On the steady part of the L frame, it is written "MOD." and then under it is written "10-5".

Does that mean anything?

Yes, 10-5 means that it is the fifth variation of the Model 10. If you can get ahold of a copy of Roy Jinks "History of Smith & Wesson" it will explain the variations of the Model 10.
