What would you get your wife for Protection? - Page 3

Taurus 709 or Ruger SR9C. Assuming they are +p rated. If not than the same models in .40 s&w.

Just bought my wife a Ruger LCR after much consideration. She can't rack the slides easily on my PPS or Solo. In the middle of the night, home alone, half asleep I would not count on her to rack the slide properly and have one of them ready to shoot.

So I decided to buy her the LCR....it can remain loaded and ready for action for years in our bedside table. IF she needed it, she wouldn't have to do anything to it before pointing and shooting at the BG.

I took my wife to the range and spent a small fortune renting about 20 different guns. In the end she liked the 380s. She piked the Ruger LCP.

If the woman likes the gun she is much more likely to carry it.

The choice of a carry gun is very personal let her shhot a variety and decide for herself. My wife carries a Smith and wesson 642-2 with Federal Hydrashok ammo. Yeah suprised me too.

Take a tactical training class for home defense from a reliable source. They will discuss options like shot guns, amilified shooting ear pro, eye pro of various tints, techniques for shooting in the dark vs muzzle flash, etc, etc. Plan on lots of shooting practice and builidng a home plan for break ins. If the other members won't practice their role, that can make it more risky. That is why leo's practice-proactice-practice. Best first defense is a "real" alarm system with signs at various recommended locations. Your local police will visit your home and give you pointers. You may end up doing hedge removal, tree trimming, etc when they finish with you.

You have to be careful with these things.
My wife started with a 3" SP101, a basic pistol class, and Kathy's book.
Then she took a more advanced class and and bought an M&P9.
Then she wanted a smaller semi and got a Bersa Firestorm .380.
Then she got an M&P22 so she could shoot cheaper and still use her regular M&P holster.
Now she is angling for a 1911 because she wants to shoot a .45 and needs a single stack because of small hands. She is also talking about a shotgun and rifle.
Her wants are really having an impact on mine.

Don't "get" her anything. Let her shoot everything that fits her hand well at a gun store that rents handguns and go from there.

I got a RIA 1911 .22 and went target shooting yesterday with my wife. We also rented a beretta 92 9mm. She could barely hit inside the bullseye circles on a 5-target sheet and even missed the sheet some of the times. She has very large hands and had great difficulty holding the gun. Once she picked up the Beretta 92, she was hitting excellent groups and had almost all of her shots inside the target near the bullseye.

If I was shopping for her, a 1911 for self defense would have done her more harm than good.

.410 revolver is the worst possible option for a defense gun... I wouldn't get her anything. I'd let her pick it out and then pay for it.

first the 410 rev is a toy and take her to a class that provides a mix of guns so she can make an informed selection on her own.

I would not lighten the trigger pull on any gun, you might get a click instead of a bang. Buy her a 327 mag. and load it with 32 longs. You can always go to bigger loads.

I have not read all the replies here but I do want to comment. I am a 64 year old wife and my hubby got me a Ruger sr9c. When we are home we have both 9mm's loaded and both shotguns loaded for home protection. When I am out and about I will cc the Ruger SR9c.

The gun is a dream. I can get off 18 shots in just a bit-and do so with deadly accuracy. Because of the danger of multiple threats in the times we live in-I want a pistol that has a large capacity magazine-as I do not know if I could reload in a crisis situation. I figure that with 17 rounds and one in the chamber I have over 4 rounds each for 4 threats and two to spare.

This gun conceals well on my 5 foot 6 inch frame as I do not wear tight clothing-which makes it a bad choice for some younger ladies out there.

The SR9c loaded with Golden Saber 124 gr. +p ammo is all I will ever need when I am away from home.

I would give her an air weight J frame in .357 mag and have her shoot .38 SPL range loads in it. Recoil is manageable for my girly 125 lb wife with .38 target loads.

When she carries it for defense it has .357 mag HP in it. I figure if she ever needs to shoot it in a SD capacity she won't notice the recoil difference.

I wonder about that ripnbst-only because of multiple threats. I have the Ruger sp101 and I have .357 ammo loaded in that gun. The problem is that in a case with 3 or even maybe 4 enemies coming at me in a parking lot-I would not be capable of getting off more than ..say.. 2 rounds in a matter of seconds. I know because I have tried it. The trigger pull on the sp101 makes it difficult for me to accurately shoot more than 2 shots quickly.

I am surely not that experienced-but I do like lots of rounds that I can get off in a hurry-if need be.

Some sort of light weight da revolver with bobbed hammer, I'm not a S&W fan so not sure what's even out there these days? My ruger SBH .44 magnum sits atop my night stand and she knows how to use it well, definately not a carry gun for her tho!

Look at the LCR in a light small revolver with a great trigger, or an M&P shield in a semi. My wife could not rack the slide on the SR9c

She will not need to rack the slide in a critical situation with the SR9c. 17 in the mag an one in the chamber =18. When I first got the sr9c I was just sick because I could not rack the slide-after about 300 rounds that has changed-it is still not easy-but doable and I think when many more rounds have gone through the gun-it will be fine.
