Is there any cheap way to tell barrel wear?
I just got an unreal buy on an old BAR chambered in caliber .270. The gun appeared to have been carried a lot. I have a feeling it was shot a good bit also.
I gave it a good-ole Kroil and Barnes CR10 cleaning when I got it home. It took many passes with the nylon brush and about 30-40 patches before she came clean. The question; Is there an inexpensive way to determine barrel and throat wear? I just tried eyeballing it with a bore-light and, can't see any appreciable difference by comparing it to my other rifles. . Switching gears: Is it OK to use UN-chlorinated BRAKE cleaner to blast gunk outta our rifles.

I think we need a gunsmith to weigh in on this subject.
But, a borescope will give you some insight into barrel and throat wear, from a layman's point of view (me, the layman). Me, I'd just shoot the rifle and see how it groups. Martyn

barrel
The cheap way is to get a factory bullet and invert in into the crown of the barrel:the bullet should stop short of the crimp groove 1/4" if the bullet stop and the neck of the brass case the barrel and crown are too far gone.
I would also remove the bolt and look at the barrel up at the light and see how good the lands and grooves are and check for rust or pitting. |

Sir:
That BAR in 270 - don't give it a thought - those rifles are badsically hunting rifles and 25,000 to 35,000 rounds wouldn't hurt it - it's probably only got 1000 rds. through it - cleaning it was the best thing you ever did for it. Harry B. |

I'll second what Harry said. Even if it was shot a lot, it probably has no more than a few hundred rounds through it, maybe 1,000. A 270 won't hurt the barrel in that amount of shooting. Take it out and shoot it and see how it groups.
