New "Assault" Weapons Ban: What if?

Let's say an "assault" weapons ban does get re-introduced in the second term. I've read a bit about the Feds (and their almighty leader) warming up to the U.N. lately-and there's been a lot of U.N. pressure on the USA to ban firearms; so, it's not entirely out of the question, especially considering O's comments at the 3rd(?) debate.

For all you legal scholars out there: what are the possibilities they could actually remove these evil black weapons from our homes? Under Clinton, they just limited sales of new products, but under this guy, I feel it could be a little different. Could they take the weapons we already own? Has it been done before; is there any legal precedent (and would they care it there weren't)?

Personal politics aside, B.O. has made no qualms about his feelings about us clinging to our Bibles and guns. Is this retroactive assault weapons ban out of the realm of possibility? Am I going nuts?

There's a thread running in L&CR about the potential consequences going forward. Let's keep discussion there.
