Hello, jhamrick. I believe the military models had the extended screw heads on either side of frame & pocket milled in bottom of back strap for the detatchable shoulder stock.
The Colt 1980 era re-makes of the 1860 army .44 percussion have this feature.

The 1860 army will also have the cutouts on the recoil shield for the shoulder stock.

So will most civilian guns along with the notch in the grip frame.

Thanks Hawg. I only seen the ones at Cabelas, and they don't have the cutout. But now that you mention it, I have seen 1860's on GB for sale under "Three Screw 1860 Army" before and never noticed why they were called that.
I gotta put one of those on my wish list.

My bad, the recoil shield cuts do denote a martial pstol. There were some civilian guns with the notched grip strap however.
