The reason for hosting images elsewhere is bandwidth. The web site has to pay for the amount of bandwidth—traffic, i.e., the bytes that go to it and from it—so forums require that the bandwidth for pictures come out of somebody else's "budget." If the picture bandwidth for all the pictures on TFL, for example, came out of TFL's "budget," it would break the bank. So hosting the pictures elsewhere makes it possible to have pictures, not just text.

The pictures that I post come from Fulton Armory's web space, so each time someone views one of my pictures, Fulton Armory effectively "pays" for the picture to be available; TFL doesn't have to pay. We are fortunate that there are free picture hosting sites, because if not, we probably would not be able to have pictures in the posts at forums such as TFL.

Unless, of course, you have access to a web space and have paid for the bandwidth .

Regards,

Walt

Actually the sticky thread is this one. It is based on OnTheFly's post in the other linked thread, but it contains a little more detail.
