Powder preferrences
OK folks, now that the last of my Pyrodex is gone, I must seek out some more powder. What is the general concensus for the best powder to shoot in a revolver? So MANY brands to choose from.

I preferr the real deal Goex Black Powder FFFG when I can get it but if it is a bit hard to acquire then Pyrodex P is my second choice, you can use 777 in your revolver but I personally don't like it because you have a max charge of 25gr. with it & I don't like using fillers.

There is only one powder that you should use for
a smoke pole, and that is REAL BLACK POWDER, no ifs or buts, but if you guys want to use that bakeing powder in your smoke wagons well what can i say?

Reason I asked is because of what I had read here on the forum about the 777 not liking to be compressed. Just wondering what other "quirks" some of the other powders may have. The Pyrodex has always served me well, but was just wondering what other options were available. With the current state of the economy, price is also a factor.

Around here black isn't available. I use Pyrodex because it's the cheapest of the others. Almost twice as cheap as 777. True you don't use as much 777 so it goes further but then Pyro weighs less than real bp so it goes further too.

BP isn't available here either, to my knowledge. I guess I will stick to the Pyro. I'll have to get it at a sporting goods shop. All Wal-Mart has here is 777. (and #11 caps :-( )

I have to admit that I would never use Pyrodex in anything I shoot but that's just me. I would have no problem with 777 and right now, I'm shooting American Pioneer. At some point, I would like to evaluate the new Blackhorn. In the past I have also shot Clean Shot and Clear Shot. "Just my opinion guys !!! ???

My pyrodex also ran out...
Can't get black without a long journey.
I just bought a bottle of 777 and am going to methodically try it in my favorite revolvers. I may go back to Pyrodex, it burns my throat but it seems accurate, pours nice and is not horribly dirty. I think it's been around so long that people like to bash it. |

When I first tried Pyrodex when it first came out back in the 70`s or was it the 60`s ...I can`t remember now ..anyway back then it was well worth bashing ...Now days they have worked out the problems with it , and it seems to work fine ...If I couldn`t find real black powder , I would use it and just hold my nose untill the smoke clears .

I have to drive 120miles to Dixie Gun Works if I want Goex, which I try to keep on hand but it doesn't always work out that way. So I end up using a lot of 777. It's hard not to with results like this at 70yds.

Why don't you guys that can't get Goex near you, just order it? You can get 10 lbs delivered to your door for less than $150. That's cheaper than any substitute that I can get around here. Pyro P is $17+tax per pound and 777 is $27+tax! If I could have split 25 lbs of Goex 3f with someone else, I could have gotten it "delivered" for $11 per pound from "Powder Inc." Just a suggestion. I've used Pyrodex and I believe it to be more corrosive that BP or it's just harder to remove/clean. Black is easy to cleanup and I never have rust...........................Mike

I am with you on that gunruner, if you really want bp
you can get it, sub may be ok but you can not sub the best, there was a time when i thought i could not get hold of bp, but i went to town on getting it and i did so i stocked up on it. If we all chiped in to buy bp on line,? but i dont know how we would go about that? i am sure there are some of you guys are in sass and when sass comes here to AZ they allways have bp for sale, can not say for the rest of the states, just can not see how you guys are haveing a hared time picking up bp, you can buy bp from bass pro thats if you want to pay a arm and a leg for it what i mean is its there if you want it.

It's a nice thought but you're still going to be charged hazmat again for shipping it.

I'm on a tight budget with ya HH. Can't order in quantity. I also agree that the Pyrodex cleans up like champ with soap and water.

I admit, if it was 'that' important to me, I would bite the bullet but things being what they are, I really can't justify spending $150 on powder at one time. The nearest Bass Pro to me is at least as far away as Dixie Gun Works and I haven't seen Goex at any of them yet. Gander Mt. is only 70miles away in a town I go to often but they don't carry it either. So when I need it, I pick up a pound or two of 777 just to keep from giving my money to Walmart.
It's just not as important to some people as it is to others. I use loose powder propelling a patched round ball in a traditional frontstuffer equipped with open sights. That should be enough. |

CraigC..BassPro Shop still carries it , they just can`t put it out on the shelves , (new laws ) They have to keep it stored in the back room in a special container ....I live just South of Memphis about 30 miles South in Hernando Ms. I always buy my B/P by the case from Powder Inc. ...Bass Pro wants 28 bucks for a can of Goex .
I do sell to other shooters than need powder ..If you are close enough to me ..I`ll sell ya what ya need for 12 bucks a can ... I saw W Tn. on your post ././It`s about 112 miles for me to drive to Dixie Gun Works too. Let me know if I`m close enough to ya to help ya out . |
