Okay mounted my scope went to the range and I was holding just under a 2 inch group at 50 yards with a warm barrel and 62 gr hollow point wolf ammunition. I sited it 1 inch high at 50 yards but after I got home I looked at some ballistics charts and decided to click it down 3 clicks. To put me closer to half inch at 50. I think that should take anything out 250 at least possibly 300 with that accuracy

You should check your cold barrel fouled first shot, that's the one that counts for coyotes and other stuff.

To make life easy when sighting in a hunting rifle, follow the following rule. If it is for big game, sight in 3" high at 100. If it is for varmints, sight in 1.5" high at 100. It is not good enough to sight at 50, you need to move out to 100 to verify sight settings.

Seems like a good rule my chart shows the 1/2 inch at 50 = 1.5 at 100

Sounds like you're on the right track. Enjoy the Mini, they are really fun.

For what its worth Wolf ammo shot groups almost twice as big as Monarch ammo from Academy Sports. Nothing shoots better than my handloads from my mini. And I didn't spend any time at all working up my load. Just made consistant ammo with each powder charge weighed by hand and even crimps.
Try a couple of boxes of good ammo from an american maker that is NOT bulk plinking ammo before you do anything to your gun. And clean the barrel with some Barns CR-10 too. And don't expect top notch accuracy till you have fired a couple hundred rounds and smoothed out the barrel a little. And forget charts. They are normally based on 24" barrels. Do your own testing. Its the only way to know for sure how your rifle shoots. |

I found the stut to add quite a bit of consistency in my 100yd groupings. That, in conjunction with my TechSites rear site upgrade has made my rifle pretty accurate with or without scope. I also agree that the strut improves the look of the mini-14 quite a bit and really gives it the M-14 look.
Here is mine with the strut addes, and also in comparison to my M-14 |

For .223 through '06, generally you can figure that 2" high at 100 yards will be close to dead on at 200, give or take very little. (Omitting cartridges like the Swift, obviously.)
Another generality is that most critters are killed somewhere inside of 200 yards. One inch high at 100 doesn't hurt, but zeroing at 200 and knowing your trajectory will let you reach out further if you want to. |

Jismail,
Which brand of strut is that? Is that a tapered barrel mini? If so, what muzzle brake are you using?

It is the accustrut SOCOM and it is a tapered barrel with the Warrior muzzle brake on it.

In the past I have looked into those and they always say that the black warrior will not fit rifles with winged front sights.
Do you recall the item number?

That's a nice muzzle brake, but I wouldn't give up the winged front sight. You seem to have both. Where might these be found? Is it pinned? How much length does it add?

I just knocked off the winged sight, and then tapped this one on using a block of wood and rubber mallet. It fit very tightly over the reduced section of the barrel where the orignal site sat, and came to rest upon the transition point on the barrel. It has a set screw on the bottom that cinched it to the barrel to stop it from moving later. The description says it wont fit the 58X series, but it worked great on mine and I have a 581. It adds about 4 inches or so to the overal length of the rifle. |

The first mistake I made when I got my Mini 14 was order 1000 rounds of bulk 55 grain 5.56 NATO ammunition. My 1 in 7 twist barrel likes a heavier round. I had much better accuracy after switching to a 70 grain bullet. I am still burning off the rest of the bulk ammo when I go to the range, but I reload the brass with a heavier bullet for accuracy when hunting. My rifle is the tactical version and it is completely stock. It is less than a month old so it is pretty fresh off the manufacturing line. I can get 2" groups at 100 yards with good ammo and open sites. With my eyesight being what it is, I don't think I can ask for much more from this rifle. I have other rifles that I use for real accuracy. I will probably add a strut and may have a trigger job done at some time but I am just going to shoot it as is for now and let the trigger wear in a little. I am installing a Nikon Pro-staff scope to it tomorrow.

Andrew, I believe all newer minis are a 1/9. Are you sure it is a 1/7?

I was fairly certain all post 2004 guns were 1:9 twist. Ruger lists all Mini-14 currently produced as 1:9 RH twist on their web site. That being said my 581 series rifle really likes the Sierra Matchking 69gr HPBT bullets so I see no reason why yours shouldn't like a 70gr bullet. Mine doesn't particularly care for the bulk 55gr stuff either.

The newer 580 series are all 1:9 twist. Mine has stabilized 75gr. out to 100yrds. but I reload mainly 69gr for accuracy shooting. My best group is 1.25'' and I was shooting 60gr. sierra varmiter reloads. I dont know how well the 75gr would do past 100yrds. I have good luck with the 69gr so I will just stick with them.
