2 bore pistol

Why? the answer is why not! a man by the name of Colin Stolzer built one of these monsters and i want one. they wont break your wrist if you hold them right. but being greedy and not wanting to pay in the 4 digits for one, ive decided to make one by modifying a reciever and having a barrel made. overall cost will be under 300.
the folks over at the muzzleloading emporium do some great business.
il probably shoot buck and bird shot mostly, just to blow stuff to pieces, higher velocity loads will be fired from the hip.
load this thing up with buckshot and itl make a great home defense gun.

the bore dimensions will be 2 bore exactly when i lap the barrel,

The picture has to be some where on the internet. Copy the link. Then type

Don't have any spaces.

2 bore

Reminds me of a golf ball mortar.
It is a smoothbore, yes? Is that DOM tube?

Mortar disassembled:

Removable breechblock:

Barrel with breech removed:

You have me thinking about how this design could be adapted into pistol form. Perhaps an underhammer.

Since you have them uploaded you can copy the link in your post and paste it in the insert image pop up on the post tool bar. Just remember to delete the http:/ that the pop up automaticaly adds . The link will have its own http:/ in the address and will cause an error if there are two.

Hmmm.

How long a barrel do you plan?
How much do you expect it to weigh?

I get it. It's a thunder mug with a grip frame. Brilliant. Are you going to bolt this up to a '51?

So what does the BATF think of this? I ask out of my own curiosity, not to be condescending or anything...

This is to be a muzzle loading gun. The BATF does not consider MLers as firearms at all. It is not illegal.

Yes it is a muzzleloader , the barrel was made by the gun works muzzleloading emporium. It's a solid chunk of steel, found a guy on Craigslist to mill the notch out in the back, The action is from a demilled shotgun reciever. The barrel will simple bolt on, the only pressure on the reciever and bolts will be from the enormous recoil , as far is weight, hopefully heavy. Now how the gun fires is a completely new action design, simple trigger and hammer, it's where the 209 primer will go that makes it unique, can't wait to shoot 1/2 pound of birdshot out of it

Obviously it's magnum charges will have to be fired from the hip, shouldn't be too bad for target loads Sunday I will put the reciever on the belt sander so the mating surface to the barrel is flush. Tonight I will try to plasma cut the barrel mount lugs and start making them to shape and prep them for welding

Folks, I made the first 2 bore sporting rifle in at least 165 years, and perhaps in all of history. As of this time, I and others that are studying the history of these big rifles have not found any made earlier, except for harpoon firing whaling guns. I may be the very first ever. I can't say that dogmatically, but it's very possible and may be probable.
Please excuse the rifle pics here. I post them only to help prove the validity of what I am about to write here.

I am Colin's old instructor. I am better known for my German Jaegers and American Longrifles, but I have a following within the membership of Safari Club International, and my British style guns have killed the "Big Five" in Africa a few time. So I am speaking as someone with true knowledge here, and not just theory.

The idea of loading a magnum charge in a 2 bore pistol is insane.

To illustrate the point let’s look at pack howitzers.
In most cases a pack howitzer of the 1840s had a bore of about 1”. That’s close to 4 bore. Big ones would go about 1/14”. A 2 bore is larger than that by a “smidge”
A pack howitzer when it’s assembled with its barrel on a carriage and with wheels installed is about 225 to 245 pounds.

A service load of powder is about 900 grains of coarse powder.

Now let’s look at a scale of bore size to powder charges.

Going to the heavy side of usefulness we have a 40 cal rifle using about 40 grains
A 50 cal will use about 100 grains
A 58 cal will use about 135 grains
A 62 cal uses about 160 grains
A 72 cal (12 bore) uses about 220
An 8 bore uses about 280
A 4 bore uses about 550
So a 2 bore “should use” about 900-1000

A 2 bore pack howitzer used just about that much.

Records has shown that if a crewman stood in the wrong place behind one as it was fired it would often break a leg when the gun hit him. A gun and platform that weighs about two hundred and fifty pounds. The 2 bore shoulder fired sporting rifle I made weighed 22 pounds.
Are we starting to see some reality now?
A pistol will weigh about 6-7 pounds.
A magnum charge would be about 1200 grains of powder.
In my opinion, such a charge in a pistil will probably kill the shooter

Folks, don’t do it!
THINK first.

Wyo

wyosmith: beautiful rifle. (Now that is a GUN.)
What is that like to hold and to shoot? Two bore should be a 3500 grain projectile.....what is needed to make it go?

Wyo, I'm not crazy enough to load a magnum charge in the pistol, when I say magnum charge, I'm talking a theoretical charge that may be 200grains depending on how much recoil i can take, I'm certainly not loading it to a full 2 bore rifle charge!. Simply put, my magnum charges are whatever charge I work up to after proof testing that I can only shoot with two hands

Hello Darkgael and Nanew.

Thanks for posting. When I see someone saying something that may be dangerous, I feel compelled to try to warn them. Now with you new post I see your were not really meaning what I thought you meant.

And yes the ball for that gun was an honest 2 bore and runs about 3,500 grains depending on the alloy its cast from.
