Outers Foul Out system

while cleaning an old remington 308, I noticed some red stuff bubbling out of the top of the barrel. when I pulled the rod out, it was covered in a black gunk that almost looked like lead stuck to the rod. I don't shoot lead in it. this was after I cleaned the rod several times of copper fouling. prior to this, I cleaned my remington VS with no black gunk showing.
any thoughts on this this? this is weird because sometimes I get black gunk, sometimes just copper fouling. I'm confused.
