Oh what to get?
I am looking at about 4 different handguns right now. Not sure just what one I want. Looking at a Glock 23, S&W 686, Ruger GP100 or a S&W model 57 just because I think a .41 mag would be interesting.
As far as background on me I am an LEO. Have been shooting for the last 30 years. I have qualified with both a 9mm and 357 mag. These will be CCW/HD and possibly duty later on if my dept. gets away from the 9mm. So let me know what all my fellow TFL brothers and sisters would get.

The GLOCK 23 was my first handgun, so I'll always be partial to it. It is reliable and decently compact. A lot of people don't like the feel though, so that is something to take into consideration if you haven't shot with it yet. I've got nothing against any of the other handguns you listed either though, except the Ruger. I've just had bad experiences with them.

I will play the other side
Ive nothing but good experiences with Ruger, my favorite of my modest collection is a ruger. Meanwhile i had my buddy's Glock (admittedly a 40cal) crack and send plastic into his hand. Now every manufacturer has flukes, im sure Ruger has similar stories. But i would recommend the Ruger any day! Enjoy whatever you decide on

1911, and I don't even own one. If you want to really go unique get one in 10mm.

I would go with a pre-mime, pre-lock S&W 686. I have a GP100 and love it. I got rid of all my .40 calibers. I don't mind the .40 but I have 9mm's and .45acp's so consolidated.

All good choices. The .41 is best for the handloader as ammo can be hard to find.

With the ones you named I would choose the S&W 57. I already have a S&W 686 which is as good as a Ruger GP100 in my opinion. The Glock does not appeal to me not that it is a bad choice. It just does not feel right in my hands. The S&W 57 is one that I have been considering for many years and if the funds were available I would steer that way.

The 57 would be a tough gun to CCW as the N Frames are big, but with a N frame the DA trigger is second to none (IMHO) and .41 is a handloaders round if you want bullet choices. The 686 is a little smaller for CCW but still fairly heavy. A bazillion bullet and load choices in .38/357.

I have a .41 magnum Ruger Blackhawk with a 4 5/8" barrel. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
For the Range I use a 215gr SWC Cast bullet loaded with 15.5 gr of IMR 4227 powder. This pretty much is a tack driver at 25 yards. For hunting, I load up 210gr HP/XTP bullets with 21.3gr of H110 powder. One heck of a pistol and it won't break the bank buying it. I have two 44 magnums. A S&W 29-2 with a 4" barrel, and a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 7 1/2" barrel. I still take the old 41 magnum out deer hunting most days. It's just one reliable, fine shooting pistol. Eric

S&W 686 CS-1 or really any pre lock 686. For CCW use the model 60 3 inch J frame. Im drinking the glock koolaid but id have to agree, skip the G23

S&W 686 would be my choice, but that is what I'm in the hunt for next after I get a shotgun so I guess that makes me partial to those. So far the hunt for a 4' 686 has turned up jack crap so I may go with a GP100 since they seem to be more common. A Glock 19 is also on my short list as well so I guess I'm partial to that one as well lol. I'm useless in this discussion because I like/want them all.
If you held me down and forced me to chose one or the other I'd go 686 though. Either way any of those choices would be fantastic. |

If it were me, then in order of preference I would go with
-1. S&W 686. I have always wanted one, and I will get one someday. -2. S&W 57. I need a good DA revolver in my gunsafe, and this one would do quite nicely. -3. Glock 23. I already have a Glock 22, so a 23 is not too different than what I already have. -4. Ruger GP100. I love the Ruger SA revolvers, but I've just not been able to embrace their DAs. If I found one at a good price I would buy it in a heartbeat. That is just me though. |

Of the 4 guns you've listed.....I'd buy the S&W 686 .....
Its a better revolver than the Ruger in my opinion..../ and I've never been too excited about the .41 Mag..../ I think the .357 mag is more fun to shoot. ------------ Why you'd want a Glock in .40S&W ...?? is beyond me..../ if you want a .40S&W why not buy one in a platform that is a little more classic ...like a Sig 226 .... ------------ But for a duty weapon down the road...depends on what fits your hands the best, what grip angle you like, etc...but I'd take almost any Sig 226, 229, etc over a Glock personally.... I don't know about a revolver as a duty weapon in this day and age....in the 50's or 60's maybe...but not these days for a LE officer - where capacity might make a difference..../ the 686 is fine as a defensive weapon for a civilian like me ...but I'm not trying to be a cop ...where you might find yourself in some predicaments where capacity might be a big deal.... |

I have been LEO for 22 years now. Trained with, graduated the academy and carried the 686 my first year. Still have that pistol and shoot it today. Love it and will give it to my sons one day. Great pistol. Moved on to Colt 1911 in 10 mm (Delta Elite) another great pistol that I love to shoot. Out of all my pistols my son loves to shoot that one the best.
When I started working undercover the 1911 was to big and bulky so I moved on to a Glock 23. I tried several different pistols but I didn't like the trigger pulls on any of them. I always said I would never own a Glock. Never came a little sooner than I thought. I really like the consistent trigger pull and it is one of the most reliable pistols I own. Easy to conseal. I have been carrying that pistol for nearly 15 years no in all types of weather and no problems. Like you have been looking for a S&W 41 Mag but haven't found the right one yet but still looking. Have never owned Ruger revolver so no opinion there. 686, 23 or 57 any and all great choices don't think you can go wrong. If mainly for duty I would go with the Glock. |

Oh what to get?
Given everything you said and how you want to get away from 9mm.
Then the Glock 23 would be it. |

Yours is the best response I have heard so far. I carry a G19 and G17 from time to time. I may end up with a G22 or G23 depending on which one I can locate the easiest. I will put off the revolver for a later date.
