This one's been covered thoroughly in previous threads. A search of your thread title delivers this list:
http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...archid=4213750 Lots of reading there.

I think that link is dead. Do a search, you'll literally find thousands of posts on the topic. I like my synth mossy for HD cuz its light, but I hunt with my 870. All up to you, but probably smart to just do a search. Maybe a moderator can make this thread disappear?

I think it all depends on budget. I went Mossberg 500 from Buds Gun Shop. I like the 590A1 but just couldnt get the funds for it and I really dont need a bayo lug. I also like the Remington 870s and I found one I could have gotten in my price range but I read about problems on the finish.
They both will do the job of HD and more and Im sure more then we will have to ever do. I dont think we will ever be going to battle and then a shotgun wouldnt be my first choice. |

Well both are fine guns but im going with the trusty 870. I own multiple 870's and have never had a malfunction, failure to fire, no problems at all. EVER. Thats not to say that there is not bad apples in every batch. My reasoning for picking the 870 is first why fix something that is not broken. I have never had a problem so im sticking with it. Next is the 870's receiver is milled from a solid block of steel. Not so with the Mossberg. (aluminum). Im not saying it is less superior than the 870 im just saying I personally like the extra weight to my HD shotgun. Maybe my dislike for Mossberg is the lightweight toy like feel to me and the only Mossberg I ever owned is being sold on consignment at my local gun shop right now. I look at the Mossberg vs Remington debate is just like Ford vs Chevy. Its a never ending debate. It might be interesting to find out if there is any relation of shotgun preference to truck preference.

I have a couple of 500s. One is the stock model bantam 500 (all black) which is perfect for me (short arms).
The other is harder to find. It's a 500 youth model camo finish with tru glo sights. It's the bantum Turkey model. Both are 20 gauge. They are excellent firearms. I've only put about 400 rounds through each gun. Never had 1 malfunction. Prefer the safety on the top.

500 is choice for HD
Have to go with the 500 for home defense. Safety being on top is huge, not only for accessibility but also for ease of use. I use the 870 for the field because it gets a lot more wear and tear out there. But having one of each, I'd have to say my preference for the 500 is only slightly more than the 870. Boils down to what you like and what you're willing to pay for it.

870 all the way. I prefer the trigger-mounted safety because I can keep eyes on target as I disable or enable it. Also, never a bad round through the fellow.

I prefer the Ithaca M37, myself... but since that's not on the list: Mossberg 500. Just cause I own one. That's it.

870 as 1st choice. Benelli Nova would be my 2nd choice with the Browning or Mossberg 590 also contenders. I'd pass on the 500.

The H&R Pardner pump is an 870 clone, and a damn good one. Having handled the 870 Express and Mossberg 500 quite a bit, I would say it is superior to both. It's also 2/3 the cost of the Express.

870 hands down over a 500 just pick up both and you will see why.

Its truly is a matter of preference. I have shot both and i can say that i personally like the mossberg better.
The 870 is heavier and the safety and bolt release are in a place that are not as easy to get to as the mossberg. If I was going hunting and someone handed me one,I would be happy with either, but i would prefer the mossberg. |

Flip a coin. They are both excellent shotguns. Wingmaster or Mossberg 590 or Persuader. Any make a good choice and it's preference.

870 all the way. Work the pump on each at the store, and you will pick the 870. (that's what sold me any way)

[QUOTE]The 870 is heavier and the safety and bolt release are in a place that are not as easy to get to as the mossberg./QUOTE]If you plan on puttin and tactical stock with a pistol grip on it the grip will make it very hard to access the bolt release.
[QUOTE]870 hands down over a 500 just pick up both and you will see why./QUOTE] Completely agree. Go to a gun store that has both which is like all of them and handle both of them and it will make your mind up right there.
