Slugs out of a smooth bore at 100 yards?
Can slugs be still used at a hundred yards out of a smooth bore accurately? I'm selling my rifles for some extra cash but want to still have something I can deer hunt with. I'm thinking about having my shotgun pull double duty since the farthest shot I take when hunting in the woods is 100 yards anyways.

I should add that I'd be shooting out of a 18.5" barrel with rifle sights. Just wondering what you guys think.

Same setup but with a bead only, I am comfortable at 65 yards and consider 80-85 a max... If my ribs are showing... i would sure try a hundred yard shot... Never tried rifle sights on a shotgun so i can only hazard a guess i could feel a bit more comfortable at the 80-100 yard distance...

I have a 18.5'' single shot smoothbore shotgun with rifle sights, the sight picture looks like from a Mosin Nagant.
Thats how it shoots at 60yds with Brenneke Exact 1 1/8 ounce slugs, 6 shots: The sights are dead on for 60 so I'd expect at least 2 inches of drop at 100 so I would need to aim higher. I guess palm-sized groups would be possible. Remember, the slug loses a LOT of velocity on its way to the 100yd target, I'm not a hunter but I imagine the loss of speed could affect how it performs on the animal. Oh, and since the gun weighs only 6 lbs it beats the living crap out of me with 2 3/4 shells, and I'm 210 lbs @ 6'1''. Last edited by Moloch; January 27, 2013 at 09:50 PM. |

Test a lot of slugs to see which is best in your gun . I have had good luck with plain old wincheter rifled slugs , out to 125yrds . had a 2 1/2 power scope on a 1200 winchester . i even used it in the summer to shoot ground hogs , great practice .

Best for 100 yds is..
to scope your shotgun and fire various slug to see what give best accuracy.
For hunting Southern Michigan and Ohio )where I grew up, I found the Brenneke slugs gave BEST accuracy and made 100 yd. Normal Forster style sluga are best used @ 85 yds. |

I don't hunt with a slug gun, but have a 20" IC choked slug barrel with iron sights for my 870. With standard old cheap slugs I can keep 3 shots inside 4-6" at 100 yards. No where near as good as my scoped rifles, but I think I'd be able to take a deer inside of 100 yards with it if needed.

I could hold out to about 60 yards with my 18.5" smooth bore with a bead and factory Foster type slugs. To 100 yards with homecast foster slug handloads. I never hunted with it but I didn't have any problem holding to minute of Deer with it.

Probably not. I have a couple of shotguns (NEF & Mossberg smooth bores,) that shoot rifled slugs very well at 50yds, but not consistent at 100yds. If you want a 100 yd slug gun go with a full rifled barrel and maybe a scope. I had a 20 inch 870 smooth bore with rifled slugs that would not shoot well at all at 50 yds with Winchester or Federal slugs. I also have a 20 gauge 500 that shoots rifled slugs better with the 26 inch barrel with modified choke then the 22 inch barrel with rifled sights, go figure. Try out your setup and see how it works.

I have a Win 1200 32" scoped that will hold 4" IM choke
My Mossberg 500C 26" rifle sights will hold 6" IM choke My Mossberg 9200 with 18 1/2" will hold 6" Full choke Shooting from a rest which I would be shooting from at my deerstand. This is 60 yards with the Win1200 offhand shooting as fast as I could pump another shell into the chamber and shoot. I don't remember anymore if it was Winchester, Remington or Fiocchi slugs but it doesn't matter because at 100 yards they all shoot close to the same point. As long as you have at least an IC or M choke you should be able to duplicate that. If you aren't choked then you need to look for the oversize slugs or you won''t be consistent.

Agree.
My old 1100 with 22" iron sight/fixed IC will hold 4 to 6 inch 5 shot groups @100 yards with WW 1oz. rifled slugs (aka. lead thimbles). Accuracy begins to drop off after 15 rounds or so, from lead build up. I de-lead the bore with 4 ought steel wool wrapped around a 10 gauge bore brush and spun with an electric drill - do this outside with the barrel downwind of you. Note: If you have a choke tube barrel - do not use the spinning bore brush at the interior junction of the bore and choke tube! The smoother the barrel interior becomes the less lead buildup occurs. YMMV |
