Revolver stock repair?

I have about a 1/4" chunk missing out of the bottom edge / corner of a decent set of old S&W diamond revolver stocks. Is there anything at all that can be done to make something like that look less noticeable, or is it just something to live with. I thought of at least sanding the jagged edges a little and dabbing some stain on it ... not sure about filling it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Fill it with a piece of matching wood, sand and finish
OR
Sand and finish.
