I've owned Smith & Wesson, both Model 17 and 18. Both great guns. You wouldn't be disapointed with either. Same for Dan Wesson 22's. Great shooting, if somewhat heavy to carry. I've owned several Ruger Single-Six's and Colt single actions.

Today, I've only got a Ruger Single-Six, and a High Standard R-106 Sentinel. The Sentinel is a really fun gun. It's become the gun I carry when I take my walk in the morning. You never know when you'll be attacked by a rouge pine cone or something. About the same size as a K-frame, it's a nine shooter with a 4" barrel, and an aluminum frame. It's not a target gun or anything, but just a neat little gun to have and seems to be plenty accurate enough for plinking. And best of all, it was inexpensive. I bought it about a month ago for less than $175.00.

There's a very good reason why the older S&W K-frame .22's carried the "Masterpiece" moniker...
You may luck into one as new in box if you look long and hard enough.

i think ive found it....going to look at a k22 masterpiece....looks to be in perfect condition in box with paperwork....600 bucks...going to see it tuesday

The K-22 Masterpiece series is the top of the line for SA/DA .22 revolvers, especially at any kind of reasonable price. There are plenty to be found in the $400 - $800 range. Find a nice one, buy it, and don't look back.

Spend some time shopping around-and try to find an original Smith Model 17-I bought one for $500 and of course it was used,but well cared for.Money well spent.A very accurate and reliable revolver.

Only had time to run about 30 rounds through it off my porch, but WOW what a great shooter...

i get lucky sometimes......last year i found a 1918 colt 1911 in a footlocker while working, and the owner gave it to me for FREE...check out the thred in semi forum called "my greatest find yet"

Edit: yes, its perfect condition, and i got the box and paperwork...

Remove the grips.
Put something else on there and shoot with them, store the originals.

k511, Yes, yes you do sir... Kudos! Now to find THE ammo it will shoot best. It'll shoot most any .22lr round well, some better than others, so find the round it prefers.

It is almost too pretty to shoot. But shoot it anyway, with a smile on your face.

Did I say, really nice?

If you are leaning S&W...
My personal favorite is pretty much what your initial post spoke to.
I've had several M-17s and really enjoyed them. Prefer the 617. I did what Mr. Doyle did, I waited. When the gun presented itself, I bought it. It was not a bargain. About full retail. But these guns do not show up very often....I was going for a no-lock model with 10 shots...a bit more difficult to locate.

You did great getting a true K-22 in mint condition for $600. They are getting scarce and expensive. I don't see a need for the underlug on a .22 but others like it. The K-22, M17, and M617 are all very accurate guns.

I have two .22 revolvers. A ruger LCR .22 and I just bought a rare hard to find brand new Smith Wesson 351pd .22 magnum revolver. Both are snubbies. I took it out for the first time a couple of days ago and the new SW was great. But, I still like my ruger LCR 22 revolver the best I think.

The trigger pull is just perfect. I have to get used to the magnum I guess.

I faced the same quandry and I went with the Ruger SP101 .22 LR. It is an heirloom quality firearm, built very solidly but not overweight like the S&W.

Roger may be speaking about the 617, which is a bit barrel heavy, particularly the 6" version.

Nice K-22! They really are the gold standard in double action .22 revolvers. I also removed the perfect condition diamond magnas from mine for safe keeping, and installed a set of Ahrends. Just realized I've not shot my K-22 (17-0) recently, I'm going to have to do something about that. They have gone up a lot in price, I picked mine up for $430 7 or so years ago. Of course, some picked theirs up 35+ years ago for under $100. Great find!

I did end up getting a cheapie, well worn H&R 622 for those days when I don't feel like cleaning the K-22 afterwards (it is kept religiously clean, the H&R, not so much

) . It's a good little shooter (better than the Taurus 94 IMHO for less money), but not in the same league as the K-22.
