Looking for info on Russian VSS rifle
I just picked up the new edition (Nov. 2008) of Soldier Of Fortune magazine, and on pages 42/43, there is a photo of a Russian soldier sitting on top of a Russian BTR (armored transporter) guarding 3 blindfolded Georgian soldiers. The Russian is holding what appears to be a suppressed AK-47. The caption says it is a VSS (Vintovka Snayperskaya Spetsialnaya Vintorez ) 9X39mm special purpose scoped weapon that fires a 250gr. bullet at subsonic speeds from a necked up version of the 7.62X39mm cartridge. The weapon caught my interest and I attempted to Google it to learn more about it, but came up with nothing. Does anyone know what it's 'special purposes" are or anything else about this rifle?
