marlin 60 vs ruger 10/22

just wanted to get some opinions on which is better for the price i am looking to get a used marlin or used ruger in 22 semi auto for hunting squirrel the marlin i found is 100 cash and the ruger around 160 just wondering if the ruger is worth the extra 60 thanks in advance for the advice

Get the Ruger. It is worth the difference. The Marlin is an OK gun, and they generally shoot well, but they are designed to be cheap to make, and have numerous design flaws that will sooner or later cause a problem. The Ruger is a better design, and while it is more expensive it is also engineered to be durable and trouble-free.

If you live ina free state where you can use the big magazines that is a plus for the ruger..however the tube mag is a lot easier on the fingers.

the marlin may be a little more accurate out of the box but both mill shoot minute of squirell noproblem and both will be extremely reliable.

I would choose on the magazine option becuase that is the only real functional difference...unless of course you're wantng to trick it out

i have both, but they are more than 20 years old and still chugging along. the marlin model 60 is slightly more accurate. the ruger is easier to reload. i prefer the ruger myself.

a word of caution, marlin was taken over by a group that owns remington and others. these new marlins and remingtons seem to have gone down in quality and up in complaints. do your own research and purchase what you like.

I have a Marlin 60 that I've had for 17 years ..... with about a jillion rounds through it by now.

Still works. Still accurate.

I have 2 of each,They are both nice rifles . My go to rifle is always the Marlin 60. Because it is tube fed it has a much slimmer profile,not boxy like the 10-22.I also feel the 60 is more accurate. That being said, there are more after market parts for the Ruger which you will need to buy to make it more accurate than the 60..Enjoy, this subject has been chewed over many times on different forums. Let us know what you finally buy. The best advice I can give you is shoulder each,then you will know... to buy the 60.Cliff

I have a 10/22 and my father has a Model 60 I have shot quite a bit. They are both good little guns, but as others are saying, I like the Ruger a bit better. I think it is made a little beefier as well.

If the extra 60 bucks isn't too much of a stretch - I say go for the 10/22.

On the other hand, if it will break the bank for you, you will most likely not be disappointed by a Model 60

I had the same choice a few weeks ago and went with a NIB Marlin 60. After about 300 rounds no failures with CCI Mini-Mags. It's also surprisingly accurate with the factory open sights. I was considering installing a Tech-Sight peep sight but based on the accuracy of the factory open sights I don't think that will be necessary.

I have both and they're both good and accurate-ish . I say ish cus I also have a Savage mk2 FV and there is really no contest . My model 60 is an older model . It has a 22" barrel and holds 17 rounds . It also have feeding problems when I use bulk ammo with it but it works great with mini mags . My 10/22 is -?-?-?-? well it's a 10/22 so it's great and has no problems . OK the Ruger has 1 big problem . The iron sights suck IMO . I have not compared them side by side for accuracy cus I almost never take them out together so Im not sure how they compare . I hit what I'm aiming at with both of them so no problems there with either one . The only issue is the feed jams the Marlin gets with some ammo . I most certainly get more jams with the Marlin then the Ruger .

So in short if you want a gun that you will almost never have a problem with for the life of the gun get the 10/22

i find the .10/22 way too short for me. ( big guy )

however, i have still been knocking rabbit, squirrells, coons and anything else i can find at a few hundred yards for years.

I opted for the 50 round banana mag and bring a few loaded. put some stingers in this baby and go to town.

Get the Ruger. There are tons more after-market parts/options you can pick up for it.

Thats what I wound up doing. Both guns work just fine, Marlin mayby a bit more accurate, Ruger a little bit easier to load and a bunch easier to unload.

It's nice to have an extra mag for the Ruger versus pocketfull of ammo for the Marlin and drop them in the tube one by one.

If I had to pick a favorite I'd have to flip a coin.

I've had a Marlin 60 for years and it has performed perfectly. If you don't plan on altering it and just shooting it, with proper maintenance, I think it will last you the rest of your life regardless of how old you are now or how long you live.

Check out the Marlin 795. I've had two for over ten years and not a single problem. I like the "traditional" mag on the 795. I had a 10-22 for five years and it was a good gun but I decided to stick with the 795s. Should be around $120.00

A buddy of mine has a 795 . It,s a bolt action and very accurate . nice gun , it did take a little bit for the bolt to work it self in . Nice choice

can i put videos up here? if so, how? I've got a video of myself at the range putting 500rds through the 10-22 upside down, sideways up and sideways down without a single jam, misfire or problem at 350yds inside a 6x6 via the 50clip option.

ah the age old rivalry.
I've had both, got rid of the marlin and regretted it. the marlin is more compact and more accurate.

the Ruger is less picky about ammo, more customizable, has faster reloads and is more reliable.

both are great for squirrels, if you just want a cheapo to rock around the floor boards of your truck or ride on the 4 wheeler then the marlin is a good choice. however with faster reloads and higher ammo cap(with ruger 25 round mags that is) the ruger is just a lot more fun for plinking. I use my 10/22, dressed up as an AR15 to trim the pine cones off trees since pine squirrels are protected in idaho and it does a good job. ground squirrels are fair game and fun too but I am a mean sadistic type of guy and like to hit them with larger calibers.

Unless you keep a sonic bath in your back pocket, go for the Ruger. The Marlin is a good gun, but when they get dirty, they are pure heck to really clean and the very devil to reassemble if you ever have to take them down all the way.

The real questions is, "What is better for you?"

It sounds like you just want to take it out of the box and hunt it with. To that extent, the Marlin is probably a better choice since they tend to be a little more accurate out of the box.

If you wanted to barbie it up with high-cap mags, fancy parts, and black foldy bits, the Ruger would be the way to go.

I have both, and would recommend the ruger. My recommendation comes with a disclosure and warning. If you buy the 10/22 you could easily spend hundreds and hundreds of $$$$$$, as there are after market accessories that allows you customize it to your liking. It is only limited by your imagination.

I like the aftermarket best for the Ruger. The ability to change magazines makes it more than worth it to me...especially since Ruger came out with their own 25 round magazine.
