DSA SA58 OSW and AKMSU Krinkov

I am really interested in the SA58 the most and would really like to hear something from anyone who has fired one. It seems like an awesome rifle and I have always liked the FN FAL just thought it a bit too bulky. This rifle seems perfect in size and power. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

--- I also would like to ask about the AKMSU Krinkov in 7.62 x 39 and was wondering if that rifle is nice. I like the AKM for its rugged style and reliability. I also like the potent 7.62x39. Any thoughts on this rifle will be appreciated as well thanks.

wow, this is an old thread...and nobody responded?!?!?! surely there are some other people out there with these rifles and recommendations...

well, I have DSA SA58 OSW and love it! it shoots straight and is a good step up from a M4 as far as stopping power; the short barrel makes it easy to maneuver and cuts down on the weight abit, but definitely still heavier and more cumbersome than a M4; if you can get your hands on one, you won't regret it; it is probably one of my favorite rifles, and plus I love the aggressive look that DSA did with the traditional FAL

Yeah? What is that a 12.5" barrel? What kind of muzzle velocity are you getting out of that?

11.5" and I don't really care about the velocity that much; but it's fun to shoot, accurate, and knocks down my steel target every time; my M4 barely makes the target wiggle...

Curious... I wonder with the short barrel and resulting reduction in muzzle velocity, would you be close to .300 BO performance?

I think you'd still be ahead of .300 BLK noticeably. 147gr out of a 16" .308 barrel is leaving at about 2600fps. Guesstimate about 2400-2500 out of an 11.5" barrel. A 9" .300 BLK will throw the same bullet about 1600fps. So figure maybe 1700fps (being generous) for an 11.5" barrel.

So ballistically, an 11.5" .308 is probably closer to a 16" 7.62x39. Just looked at the numbers and the FAL is about 5" shorter and still outperforms the AK ballistically - though as I recall SBR 7.62x51s are pretty dramatic in the flash and blast category.

BR, that's assuming a linear relationship with the "rule of thumb" velocity loss per inch of barrel. Is it the same relationship when we get down to 11.5?

Patrick Sweeney did a test with an AR-15 upper built with a 26" barrel and tested 19 loads through it which was published in 2015 Issue #3 of G & A's AR-15. Each was chronographed, and then an inch was cut off before repeating the process, going from 26" to 7". Although each load was unique, and ran at different speeds, there was a tipping point on the length scale where each began losing more feet per second than it had in the previous inch. It seemed in general to happen between 17-14"s.

But hey, the OP loves what he has and at the end of the day, that's all that matters. It was just an "I wonder if" kinda question, since the BO was designed for short barrels, whereas the .308 was designed for longer ones.

Yeah, I had the same thought when I saw the picture since I have a 9" AAC in .300. So I dug up the above numbers. Even if the velocity decrease isn't linear for the 11.5-16" range, you'd have to have a dramatic decrease to drop it to .300 BLK levels for the same barrel length.

I'm curious how the 11.5" is on flash and blast. I know a 7.5" 5.56 can rattle your teeth OK and the flash will make a red dot blink out unless you crank up the brightness.

Overall, I could see some attraction to a 23.5" package that can still throw a 150gr .308 bullet around 2500fps.
