10/22 Bolt Stuck Closed

Hi all,

I got a new 10/22 last week and was just now putting a scope on it. I have yet to put a round in it and have cycled the bolt a few times with no problems. After putting the scope on, I tried to pull back the bolt, and it's completely stuck.

I've read the manual and can't find anything. I'm new to the gun but I've toggled the safety, pushed the bolt release in any direction it will go, and still can't get the bolt to slide back. It's very stiff and won't budge. The bolt lever has a mm or so of play, but the bolt doesn't move at all.

Since I'm new to the gun, I'm guessing its user error but I'm completely stumped. I removed the scope in a last ditch effort that maybe the screws threaded through the stock in to the bolt, but no luck still.

Any ideas?

I got it to move by placing a towel on the end of table and dropping it on the slide release. Now to figure out why the slide is very tight the closer it gets to closed.

I'd bet the scope mount screws are too long and catching on the bolt.

^^^^^^ What bedlamite said. It's very common on 10/22's.

Check the bolt out.
Likely one of the forward scope mount screws was too long and was contacting the bolt.
This also probably means you now have a gouge on the top of the bolt.

For future reference to anyone, I had used blue thread lock on the scope rail screws from some tips I saw online. Such as http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/a.../t-483149.html

The thread lock dripped in to the chamber and was gumming up the bolt pretty bad. I stripped everything and cleaned out the thread lock. The screws are NOT long enough to thread in to the receiver.

Looks like it was a noob mistake. Hopefully I don't make worse ones.
