confusion with remington primers?

I just found out that I've been using the wrong remington primer for 1000s of rounds. I've been loading rem 5 1/2 primer for 9mm ammo. On the box it simply says small pistol primers, but now I read on the remington website that they are the magnum primers and 1 1/2 are for typical small pistol cartridges like the 9mm? Not labeled very well on the box! Was I on the verge of blowing myself up? Any comments?

I don't know if you were on the verge or not, you didn't specify the load. If is was a lighter load, probably not. Don't use magnum primers unless the data calls for it.

My guess, based in tens of thousands of rounds, is that going to a magnum primer raises pressures no more than 10% and generally less.

Yes, I now know that I should use rem 1 1/2 primers. I was using very middle of the road loads anyway and saw no pressure signs. I loaded some with 1 1/2 and chronographed them and they were very close to the incorrect load where I used magnum primers. I'm glad I didn't blow up. Now I know better!

That primer chart is gonna result in somebody using the rem 6 1/2 for 223! Yes, it's a small rifle primer, what they don't say there is it was meant for the 22 Hornet, bee or other small low pressure 22 centerfire. Use that 6.5 in a .223 and you'll get perforated primers with damage to your bolt face! Another example of rem not being very clear on primer numbers. USE THE 7 1/2 FOR .223!
