Need help for .223 reloading
Used dummy bullet to determine OAL needed for my CZ bolt.
Opened neck so bullet just squeezed in, reading was 2.41. Chambered dummy round and ejected same. Reading was 2.310. Did this several times thinking the the loose bullet was being shoved into casing when it touched the lands on the barrel. Set my OAL at 2.280 and bullet chambers nicley. Anyone know if this procedure is good or am I gonna die?[/B][/SIZE] Last edited by Lilswede1; September 9, 2008 at 12:57 AM. Reason: rephrase |

what you have done is fine. I tend to set my .222 about 5 thou off the lands with a similar style. I size a case and then put a hacksaw cut down the neck. Slightly push a bullet in my dummy case by hand then chamber the bullet. Yes the bullet would be contacting the lands when you chamber the dummy.
When i eject the round i measure the overall length then set my die down another 5 thou. Just be sure to check the round in your magazine to be sure it fits. You set it back 30 thou which for a varmint rifle it is a fair bit of free travel. I have about that much free travel in my .300wm because i am mostly governed by my magazine length. |

To the OP: Yes, you are gonna die, but not likely from a reloading mishap.

You are ok just remember to reduce your loads and work up. A side effect of seating to the lands is an increse in pressure.

On a more serious note, I use the excellent Stoney Point tool with the dummy brass for just this operation.

I'm Still Alive
Just got back from shooting at our range.
All went really well. Set OAL to 2.228 (reading was 2.310) so allowed 3M clearance. 4 out of 5 shots were touching covering an area the size of my thumb. (100 yd shots at 1" target) I'm happy. |
