Which Pistol For IDPA

Am starting to get into IDPA and am wondering which pistol to use am thinking of using my glock 32 with a .40 barrel as .357 sig ammo is outrageous. My Question is should i just buy a new pistol and if so which kind or kinds should I look at.

Start out with what you have as long as it is reasonably suitable. Try to cough up for a couple boxes of .357 Sig, a caliber conversion barrel will put you into ESP versus more refined guns.

Some speak highly of the following:
Caliber 9m Luger
Handgun: Full Size (5" barrel), 1911 type pistol.

There was, in a recent issue of The Blue Press (Dillon Precision) an article outlining the writers thinking on this.

A bunch of the regulars at my last IDPA club were buying SW M&P 9mm's when I moved--they put a dab of orange Day-Glo paint on the front sight and started kicking my CDP-shooting arse with an (at the time) under $400 gun.

If you don't reload, get an SSP legal 9--your wallet will thank you!

To shoot IDPA with larger calibers you have to reload - or go broke...
My best advice to any IDPA newcomer is to get a 9mm pistol of your choice... To shoot IDPA and enjoy it (or any of the pistol games) you need to shoot frequently...
Factory ammo is expensive, with 9mm being the lowest cost of the bunch..

If you want to shoot large caliber my personal choice is 45 acp... You need to meet the power factor of 160... The heavy 45 bullet does this at low velocity resulting in a softer recoil than smaller calibers which need high velocity and thus sharp recoil to meet the power factor...... For any caliber at this power factor you need to reload to keep it affordable...

I agree with what some others have said, shoot what you have to start but consider a 9mm if you're going to stick with it. The Glock platform works well for me so I went with a G34 for IDPA and steel matches. Only downside is you don't get much practice clearing jams.

Use whatever you carry...I think thats the intent of IDPA anyway. Your not going to blow through hundreds of rounds at a match so cost (at least as far as at the match goes) is not a big factor.

If you want to approach it as a game only then I'd recommend a 9mm in either glock ( the 34 is a favorite in either ssp or esp depending on the mods you make to it), or a 1911 in 9mm. The 9mm 1911 is hard to top for ESP. I usually either shoot my kimber .45 in cdp or my glock 17 or 22...all guns that I carry. Whats nice about IDPA is that you don't need to invest a lot of money to do well.
