22-250 reloading recipe's??

Hey all! I'm deciding to reload the 22-250 ammo for my Rem 700 SPS. I plan on buying 52gr A-Max bullets. What kind of gun powder, as well as powder charge do you use? I'm looking for high velocity but not something so hot that will exceed the maximum powder charge (don't want any safety hazards). Thanks!!

There are as many favorites as there are shooters of this fine round.

Do yourself a favor and buy a real reloading manual. Sierra has one. Many manufacturers do. You can find them online.

Those manuals have detailed steps concerning reloading and for each bullet weight, will generally offer several loads with several powders and most will have load data for various velocities and some will have remarks as to observed accuracy.

I have several reloading manuals and often cross check information.

You will be glad you did.

+1 to Geetarman

If you are using A-max bullets, get a Hornady manual too. They are a few bucks well spent.

The favorite powder for my Savage 22-250 is Varget. Your firearm may like something else. Dont be afraid to become a fellow addict to this obsession. You can have more fun trying different bullets and powders, so if you like to shoot, this is a great thing for you!

You don't list your twist rate for that rifle. 1-14 or 1-12?

Twist rate gives you an idea of the range of bullets to use. Then a powder

can be suggested for that bullet.

52 grain Match
8208 XBR
Rem Brass
CCI BR2

1-12 twist mild load.

55gr Berger Match
35.0gr Varget
CCI 200
W-W case

Sub 1/2" in two 22-250's. I've tried dozens of bullets in 22-250 and 223. Nothing tops the Berger's accuracy.

I have been using this in my 22-250 Ruger MK II

52 gr Sierra HPBT / or 53 gr HP Sierra ( both shoot at 1/2" MOA )
Varget 35 grains
CCI 200 primer
Remington case

I have backed off this load from 36 to 35 gr. cuz of the heat and humidity effected the accuracy. In cooler temps it was well under 1/2" as it warmed up it started to string the groups still under 1" but opened them up. When I backed off 1 gr it brought it back in line.

The classic load for the 52gr bullet in the 22-250 is 38gr of H380. That's why Bruce Hodgdon named the powder H380. The load is under max by a couple of grains and has always been accurate in the 22-250s I've owned.

Buy the Hornady and Lyman #40 manuals.

And I use IMR4064 w/ my 700.

You cant have enough reload manuals. Get one from each powder mfg. and one from each bullet mfg.

I've had excellant results with midweight bullets from Sierra and Hornady. IMR 4064 was my 'go to' powder for many years but now I'm using Varget.

I've been reloading since '65. For the first six years I only had a single manual and never felt I needed any more. By the time I bought my second book (because of new powders and cartridges) I had enough experience to intelligently deal with the differences found in all of them; I strongly recommend that approach to every new guy! Noobs have enough confusion to deal with without compounding it with book data differences.

Varget powder @ 35.5 gr's and Hornady 50 gr SP SX. I don't care about fps just accuracy.

Here is a good read on the 22-250 http://www.rifleshootermag.com/2011/...on_great_0930/ And I basically use the 4350 load that O’Connor spoke of with a 55gr ballistic tip.

55 grain Nosler, CCI 250, FC brass, 37.0 of 380
55 grain Sierra, CCI 200, WW brass, 39.5 of WW760/H414
Both loads are max, start at least 1 full grain less.
