870 question

I have an 870HD which has an 18" barrel w/ bead sight.
What if I tired to shoot slugs out of that barrel? From what I can gather, the slug barrels that are available are 20" with rifle sights
Can I expect some rifled slugs to be somewhat accurate @
75yds?I could always put my own rifle sights on it if it works.
The rifled barrels that I ve seen go for around 175-200$
Thats pretty much for 1 week a year deer hunting
any opinions are appreciated--thanks in advance

Does your barrel have a fixed cylinder bore, or is it equiped with Rem Chokes? I had a 18"cylinder bore on an old Remington I used to have. I tried various brands of slugs, and I believe my best group was 3" at 75 yards. Not the greatest, but not bad considering it was not a dedicated slug gun.

The HD has a cylinder bore. Perfectly safe to shoot slugs, in fact, most older slug guns were cylinder. To get good accuracy, you will need some kind of sights.

Years ago the MD Division of Correction, in its infinite wisdom, decided that all Correctional Officers had to know how to shoot slugs along with standard issue ammo. The slug they chose was the Winchester 1 oz HP Forster type. A bit of experimentation and testing on the Instructors' part showed us that most experienced shotgunners could cloverleaf the slugs at 25 yards and keep them in 6" or so at 50 yards. This was with riot bbled, bead sighted 870s. We found that slugs impact to a different point than Center Of Pattern. Commonly, those 870s with the bead mounted right on the bbl shot rather high, like 18" @ 50yds, those with bases under the bead slightly high. I'd have no problem using just a bead sight with slugs out to 50 yards, BUT I WOULD SUREASH*LL KNOW JUST WHERE THOSE SLUGS WERE HITTING FIRST.

Your 870 will do fine with slugs. At least one slug will group very nicely, and possibly several will. It's imperative that you bench test and find one that works for you. The good news is there's no ineffective 12 ga slugs. Some old threads on this, a bit of research in the Archives will give you plenty of input, or feel free to ask me privately...

Thanks for the replies. Do any of you think ther is an advantage
to the rifled slugs? Are they worth the $$?

Just for your info, the Remington replacement barrels at Cabela's www.cabelas.com are quite a bit cheaper than $175-$200.

For $105, you can get an 870 (Express finish) 20" Improved Cylinder barrel with rifle sights. It will shoot 2 3/4" or 3" shells. Shipping is $10 I think.

Just one other option...

I finally received my factory replacement 18" 870 barrel.
I ordered it directly from Remington. I looked all over the place.
All I could find otherwise were the 20" w rifle sights.
Nothing wrong with that style. I just wanted the 18" with bead front sight. With shipping it was $125. However it did take over 3 weeks for me to get it. When I ordered it they told me it would be shipped OOps!, er uh UPS. When I called back after a week of waiting they siad it went out US Mail. I finally got it and I am happy. They did say there are a few still around in the warehouse.
