Dragoon is good to go...

Got the Cimarron 2nd Model Dragoon a couple weeks ago and today was the perfect day for figuring out where it hits. The club is usually slow about replacing the tattered up paper targets so on some days it's hard to zero in on where you're hitting if it goes through someone else's holes. Today, however, it was just me...

Come to find out I'm pretty close to target at 15 yards, maybe a couple inches high but it's not really swinging off to the left like the 1860. When I was packing up, another gent arrived at the range and was astonished that these old black powder guns were just as accurate as the modern centerfire autoloaders at the same distance.

One day I'm gonna encounter one at a good price and I'm gonna scratch that itch!

I'm glad it shoots well for ya. I love a nice day of makin' smoke and holes.

I know how ya feel. My first C&B was my Uberti 2nd gen that I got in July this year. (Got my Uberti Walker the next month

). Both of mine shoot HIGH at 15yrds but the groups are nice and tight if I'm using two hands. I've been woundering if cimeron has a quality product. Have you checked the arbor on yours? Any cylinder drag?

I've been working on my pair of Dragoons for a few weeks myself.
Absolutely some of the best fun I've done.

I know you're having funn as well. Don't grin too much, or you'll come home with black teeth.

Hey Bushmaster,

If you're wanting to know a little about the Dragoon, I think that it does have a slightly shortened arbor, but not enough to really effect much. There aren't any cylinder drags, but the fit and finish on the exterior is not perfect. In fact, my 1860 Pietta has a considerably better fit and finish on the exterior than does the Cimarron. The brass on the Dragoon looks cast and not forged from a solid block and as such the joining surfaces are kinda blah against the frame. Additionally, there's a couple voids/pits near the hammer. The Pietta doesn't have these problems and the fit of the Pietta is MUCH better.

Internally, is where things take a turnaround. The internals feel much tighter on the Cimarron than the Pietta. Lockup on the Cimarron is much more positive than the Pietta.

An interesting note is that I posted an issue with gas cutting the arbor on the Pietta, but after 60 rounds of 40 grains of 3fg I haven't seen so much as a mark on the arbor of the Cimarron.

Overall, I would have to say that the $180 price for the Pietta 1860 was a better deal given the negatives of a Cimarron. Howvever, pricing is kinda moot since Pietta doesn't make a Dragoon

yeah I remember your post about the gasses cutting the arbor and I have put about 100-150rnds through my dragoon and walker combined and am already getting a "line" were the gas is hitting. Oh well, I damn sure didnt buy them to put em on a shelf huh?

As far as the quality of the cimmeron, do they stamp the side of the barrels for the dumb humans that cant figure out a cartridge dont fit in these?

Nah, the Uberti information is all under the loading lever. On top of the barrel it only says: address Cimarron Fredericksburg, Texas.
