Octagonal rifle barrels

Hi guys,

As part of a custom build on a winchester 70 action I plan to install a shilen or douglas or equivalent barrel onto the action and bed it however, i also plan to have the barrel cut into an octagonal shape.

I've had a rifle with a custom octagonal barrel on there and it always attracts loads of compliments and resale value was high as well hence my wanting another. Plus it's just a little bit different.

I have no idea what barrel that was but it was very fussy with ammo. it's groups were 1.5" with all my handloads but strangely 0.75" or so with PRVI ammo.

Anyway, anyone have any experiences with octagonal rifle barrels? Could the cutting/filing process create problems?

I doubt there were probs, since the Winchester Custom Shop (New Haven) used to offer Model 70's with octagonal barrels - they were catalog items, although a Custom Shop Catalog IIRC.
