I carry the same gun in as close to the same spot I can get it (IWB does not work under winter coveralls for example) as I do every other day.

No real danger from an animal perspective where I hunt, but I treat it like any other day and strap it on since it is legal to do so with a CCW license in OH.

Always. And it's always a 357 or 44 mag revolver.

Interesting that this thread is going while I am contemplating taking a sidearm fro a hunt on my brother's in-laws farm in Nebraska. With the drought they have experienced there are more 'yotes hanging around the cattle and now they have mt. lion(s) on the property. Things that make you hmmmm

I've never carried a handgun while hunting. For me, it'd be useless weight.

Guess it depends where you hunt. When I hunt near the boarder between the wets and drug smugglers you might encounter one needs a squad to watch your back. So yes, in addition to my little 20 g I have something a little more potent on my side as well.

Cats

A cat followed me elk hunting this year, two different times. I have only carried a handgun one time hunting. I have been with someone who had an elk taken by a grizzly and I have seen black bears while out and about. I have also had an elk taken from me by three guys carrying handguns. Hard to argue with them, but it sure leaves a sour taste in your mouth. So this is another one I am not sure about.

I often carry a .22 handgun along with my 870 while upland bird hunting. I prefer to use the rimfire for rabbits that I may run across.

Otherwise, I do not carry a sidearm for deer or coyote
