I don't shoot anything on sight. When my mother gave me my first gun years ago, she told me "Don't ever kill something you can't brag about." That advice has never left me. I've killed snakes in the past. Nothing at all to brag about there. Now I leave them alone too.

Out in the bush, I let certain snakes live. Others will die. Near my home, no snake is safe.
Others: Raccoons (rampant in my area) (my dad traps couple dozen each year) Foxes (too many) Coyotes (need to thin 'em out) Skunks (who needs 'em?) *The above creatures kill all the pheasants in my town. Neighbor's dog (if he keeps trespassing or does his duty on my lawn...but I will start with a few pumps with the pellet gun) |

No sweat, Gunplummer. As usual, "If the shoe don't fit, don't wear it."
Like I keep hollerin', "Ain't no one size fits all." Different places, different problems. And, of course, different laws. We all have to play that ancient game called "Live With It". |

I think it is funny how some will shoot snakes in the wild while they are hunting or hiking. Even rattlesnakes will usually try to get away, and if not, then just walk around. We're supposed to be outdoorsmen here.

any bird that is black. Any blue jay that hacks me off. Any squirrel that happens to be near if I have any weapon. Cave crickets.
Best thing for a cave cricket is the biggest thing you got; 12 gauge skeet rounds are a minimum. |

None of the blackbird species have any sort of protection. Grackle, european starling, cowbird, whatever.
As far as the bluejay, whatever. They are covered by pest laws. As far as squirrel, we are allowed here in missouri to dispose of pests that cause damage. So I do. Glad I afforded you amusement. |

Just so you know, at least three species of cowbirds are protected. COWBIRD, Bronzed, Molothrus aeneus Brown-headed, Molothrus ater Shiny, Molothrus bonariensis As are species of grackle. GRACKLE, Boat-tailed, Quiscalus major Common, Quiscalus quiscula Great-tailed, Quiscalus mexicanus Greater Antillean, Quiscalus niger Quote:
You might wish to reference.... http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/Re...a/mbtandx.html But hey, you got the starling right! Also consider the fact that you may be prosecuted for each bird harmed or killed individually with fines in the thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for each violation. While these birds are protected along with others under the act, they also may be considered game or dispatched as pests during specified seasons or if found doing crop damage and the like (and during specified months). http://www.extension.org/pages/Feder...nd_Regulations Considering the protected birds as shoot on sight birds could be quite costly.

I have now checked Missouri statutes and they are not all exactly as they have been in years past. I will deal with all of these verminous creatures in accordance with missouri statutes in lines with the federal migratory bird laws. Being as just this sunday, I found and photographed a gray squirrel on my piano, Until I can find and confirm his dead carcass by the sharpy mark I got on him by his left haunch before I managed to chase him out, once again, the war on marauding squirrels is on, fully supported by game laws.
Cave crickets are not protected. |

Right, but you do realize that it isn't just state laws with which you need to conform, but also federal laws. For various reasons, the two may not always be in harmony with one another.
You are correct in that currently cave crickets are not protected by either state or federal law in Missouri, though there are some elsewhere that are. More and more cases are being prosecuted as a result of people openly posting their activities relating to protected species and doing so on public forums. It really can turn out to be a serious issue. With a little luck, maybe we can preclude you from some really nasty fines or jail time.

Thank You, I appreciate it,
I should not get so mad at FrankenMauser, I dont know him, I am in a different part of the Country (Thank God). He would have probably got ****** if I put down that I shoot Big Game on Sight. Or Cows that get out of their pastures. Or Ranch Horses, or Idiots. Anyway, Thanks. Last edited by TX Hunter; May 19, 2010 at 08:13 PM. |

Whats with the personal attacks? What is perfectly legal is perfectly legal! This happens to be a damned nice part of the country(Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado etc), so is Texas, atleast the parts I've been to. Coming out with the attacks and teeth chomping do nothing but make you look petty. Learn to accept that not all people think the same way you do, you'll live longer.

A guy was arrested and fined for shooting a hawk. The fine was minor, as it was a state offense. When asked why he shot the hawk, his reply was that he was going to eat it. When asked what hawk tasted like, he said "Bald eagle". Doubt it is true, been hearing it for years.

I don't know either. We have something around here we call ground crickets and they burrow with huge "hands" in the front. Kind of look like the islanders with the big hands on the old Popeye cartoons.
