M19 hammer nose hits frame

My buddy has an m19 that he bought used. The hammer nose broke after 80 rounds. After much digging he found a new nose and rivet. The nose pivots up so high it will hit the frame and give light primer strikes 1/3 of the time plus gouging the frame. We "fixed" it by slipping a piece of a staple between the hammer and nose. Works fine, doesn't look to good and i'm thinking we should not have to have to use a staple to get am m19 to fire! New nose and rivet, any ideas? (it is the correct nose, not the later style that uses a spring)

Installed upside down?? Wrong model or revision of hammer nose?? Wrong model of gun??

The firing pin (hammer nose to S&W) should pivot up and down freely, but shouldn't have much if any side to side play.

I'd buy a new nose and rivet, and make sure to get one that's made for THAT specific Dash version of gun. The dash, or revision version will be stamped on the frame where the cylinder yoke seats.
It'll look like M19, M19-1, M19-2, etc.

There are a number of hammer noses, made for a number of S&W models. You not only have to have the right pin for that specific model, you have to have one for that revision.
Pulling a pin out of a junk box could get you a pin made for an entirely different model of gun.

It is a 19-3. The nose came from s&w. The rivets were back ordered from them. The one he obtained was from a gunsmith. The new nose matched the old one (minus the broken tip).
