1911 grip screw spacing?

Does anyone have the exact dimensions of he spacing between the two grip screw studs for a 1911? Since the counterbore on the grips screw holes is the only thing to keep the grips from shifting, I would like to double check my numbers before I start boring out some expensive wood for grips. I come up with 3.073" when I measure it.

I don't have anything showing the exact dimensions. But why not simply remove the bushings and lay the frame on the wood and trace the holes? (Stake the bushings when you put them back in.)

Unless you finished the outside dimensions first, in which case you did it backwards.

Terrill, you're just a hair off. It's 3.309" C-to-C. George

Hi, guys,

I get 3.08, center to center, which is close to Terrill's 3.073. George, did you measure outside to outside of the bushings and forget to subtract the diameter of one bushing?

Terrill, I still recommend using the gun as a template rather than depending on measurements.

OOPS! No it's 3.074" +/-.005". That's from a technical drawing. George

Check your spacing with a piece of scrap wood first. Then use the good stuff if the spacing is correct.

George you could have given him the spacing from a Ballista-Molina and really messed with his mind. LOL

Thanks for the reply gentlemen. My first attempt at grips but I think I'll play some more. I have a few more handguns to match up with knives.

Terrill, it looks as if you did well for your first set of stocks. What kind of wood is it?

Jim, it is "ringed gidgea" from down under. An Autraian knifemaker sent some to me and I had to try it. It is about as hard as a wood can be and sands and polishes well. I have another maker from Atlanta doing me a knife to match. It just wouldn't do to go out in public without matching, at least that is what my wife always tells me. Do you think this is what she meant?

Very nice looking grips for a "first attempt", or even subsequent attempts!

You better hope that's what she meant!
