The Model 870 Marine Magnum

Anyone have any experience with these? Looks like your basic 870 with nickel plating inside and out and a larger magazine.

Been considering one for home defense ... not sure it has any other useful purpose outside of the military. Does it ?

Priced right ... holds 6 shells .... nice and short with a 7.5lb dry weight.

What are your opinions ?

The Magnum Marine is a nickel plated Express model.

It's a quality gun, and like all 870's, by changing barrels you can use it for any shotgun use from home defense to clay bird shooting, to duck and goose hunting.

The bright nickel finish does cause problems with hunting due to the reflection, but this makes it more rust resistant around salt water as a boat gun, which is what it's intended for.

You can get the same gun only with the Express black finish. This ls listed as the Synthetic Express 18".

I have had mine for a few years. I don't shoot it enough. I purchased the Marine Magnum because I wanted a shotgun I could have around without worry of degradation from long term storage. However, since I break it out to shoot 2-4 times a year, maybe shooting 100 rounds each time, it doesn't store long enough for their to be any sort of degredation. This is especially true since I am not on a sailing ship or in some other harsh environment. So I could have saved some $ and gone with a blued or parkerized version.

With that said, I also liked the gun because it would handle 3" shells and had the extended mag on already. While I like to keep the option of the 3" shells, I don't enjoy shooting them too much. The extended mag is great and has been no problem at all.

As for the shiny finish, as with other guns, you can home custom camo the gun in Duracoat or other paint.

I would not say I am unhappy with the purchase. I did not need the nickel plating and I paid extra to have a gun with it. And with that said, I am very happy with the gun in terms of function and durability, but those are hallmarks of the 870 platform.

This would mainly be a home defense type gun for me. I was considering this or the Benelli M series.

Just found a place that has pistol grip M3's (Pump/Semi auto) and may go take a look. I like the Benelli's but they are expensive compaired to the 870's and probably no more affective.

What really caught my eye about the Marine Magnum ...was the way it looks

I like it.

only problem, i love the vangcomp treatment - and did not want to drill or loose any of this finish, so went for express, otherwise i would have one of these

Can those be bought legally ? Or is it against BATF Regs for non law enforcement individuals ?

Thats a short barreled SG. Illegal for non-gummint types.

The 870 Marine Magnum is Awesome BTW, worth the dough for the finish, its tough as hell, beyond just being weather resistant.

I'm still leaning towards the 870MM ... Like the finish and the toughness. Called around and no one carries it ... so if I want one I'll have to order it and sit and wait.

The finish on the Marine Mag. is electroless, not electroplated, nickel.

The differences are:

1) not as shiny...it's a nice matte.

2) much more durable...adheres much better and no problems with sharp corners...won't flake or peel.

3) with proper heat treatment after plating, e-less nickel can be hardened to the 60-65 Rc range...nearly as hard as hard chrome. Don't know if Remington does this though.

4) more corrosion resistant than hard chrome or e-plated nickel.

It's the closest thing we've got to a stainless steel pump shotgun...which I'm still waiting patiently for.
