25-20 Experts

I finally received a box of 25-10 Win that I ordered for my 25-20 Winchester.

What I got in the mail, I cannot return. So now I have a box of shells that cost me $45 that do not work in my rifle. The ammo is shorter an slightly wider in diameter than my rifle.

So now I am at a lost. I am guessing there is something called 25-20 SS that I should be looking for. But it is nowhere to be found. All I can find is 25-20 WIN and that doesn't work. Any suggestions? Besides hanger queen

What is your rifle, a Winchester 1885 Single Shot ("highwall" or "lowwall")?
That is the only thing they made in .25-20 Single Shot.
Is it stamped for caliber? In those days, .25-20 would mean the Single Shot, a .25-20 Winchester would likely be marked .25 WCF.

See at:

And you thought $45 was a lot to pay for ammunition.

If you want to shoot the old ones it helps to be a handloader. My .38-55 has not seen the first factory load since I got it and very little smokeless powder.

Your rifle is not chambered for 25-20 Winchester, it is apparently chambered for 25-20 Stevens Single Shot, once a fairly popular cartridge for target rifles until Winchester introduced the 25-20 WCF for the Model 1892 lever action rifles. Stevens factory target rifles were available chambered for the cartridge, and many other rifles were chambered for it.

You will likely have to reload for your rifle. Brass is available from Bertram.

Until recently it was almost impossible to find .25-20 Single Shot brass.

It was the basis of a, for a time, very popular wildcat called the 2R Lovell.

Try your 25-20 Win ammo over on Leverguns forum. There's several guys that shoot that round there I believe.
