Handloads for .30 carbine
Hi all whom read this. I am new to the forum, I am interested in reloading for the .30 carbine (rifle) and would be interested in any comments about other than published data on powders, specifically W231 or BlueDot(?) or any other recommendations?

Because of the tapered case, I sometimes had problems with the bullet sliding back into the case. I solved the problem by choosing jacketed bullets that had enough of a curved heel that I could seat them without expanding the case. Just make sure that your brass is thick enough or your chamber is cut so that they will headspace positively. For my carbine, I never experienced any ignition problems with un-expanded cases.

The powders you metioned may be too fast buning for
the 30 cal. carbine rifle I use 14gr of W296 with a 110gr FMJ I tried cast and plated bullets and at the load they were accurate they would not cycle the actoin correctly so I went back to jacketed bullets some manuals call for a magnum primer, but a standard primer will work ( my carbine does not hit a magnum primer hard enough but works with a standard primer and have talked to others with the same problem ) |

I am quite content with Alliant 2400, 110 grain JSP bullets, S.R. primers and carbide dies. Only down side is my Turret press has a hard time keeping up with the shooting rate of fire of the M1 Carbine.

Thanks for the info. Fire,,,,I'm not sure if these powders are too fast yet!?, depending upon the load, although the issue about primers are probably a fact considering the light bolt. Ham...., not an unsafe idea I hope others look at this. ..hermit w/what load? Anyway, I won't do anything until others make their ideas known.

I've been using 15 gr. of ww296 with a 110gr FMJ bullet. I think this is the same powder as H-110. I've been using Wolf small rifle primers and like them. WW231 and Blue Dot are probably too fast.

I can tell you that Blue Dot does work... but no idea how well it works in a rifle. I've made up a few at 8.0 grains with both a 100gr Plinker and a 110gr JSP and shot them out of my 7.5" Blackhawk. These were mild-to-mid loads, certainly not hot nor "full power." If a Blue Dot load were going to sucessfully run a Carbine, I'd think it would need to be ramped up a bit.
Instead of going with H110/W296 (and using the magnum primers that are typically recommend for those powders) I simply went with 2400. Meters much better than Blue Dot and with a charge weight of 12.8 grains, seemed like a little more economical than the big dog (H110) and it's a powder easier to find than IMR-4227 which I had also used.
