"He has no idea (and I am glad he doesn't) what 6 rounds of buck shot from 30-40 yards can do if fired into a crowd..."

o yes they do know, they just want to get "assault" weapons ban and ten round mag limit first. next up is semi auto and pump shotguns.

So to cut to the chase:

1. No panic EO confiscations, etc.
2. Tighten up reporting for NICS and mental health (the latter is quite complex from a medical, psychological, psychiatric point of view). More research is needed.
3. Some baloney about AP bullets - trivial in today's world real crime usages
4. A tighter AWB - which most folks think won't happen.

Gun Violence Reduction Executive Actions

Today, the President is announcing that he and the Administration will:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system.

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system.

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system.

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks.

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun.

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers.

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign.

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations.

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement.

11. Nominate an ATF director.

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper
training for active shooter situations.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health
services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

I see a bunch of "calling on Congress" recommendations but see nothing that resembles an "order". What can't we do today that we could do yesterday?

OK, I see it now... and... I see nothing very substantial. I'd like to see #12 expanded to allow my wife to carry in her classroom. Not to mention allowing carry by adults on all school campuses.

Had a group of people huddled around my iPhone at the Walmart gun counter watching this dog and poney show.
Did pick up a box of 50 .357 mag jhp for $35

Pure awesomeness really. Since no cop in the US has ever been killed with armor piercing bullets he can safely claim in a few years that is still the case and therefore an unqualified success.

Actually the armor piercing thing is not what we may think of it to be...

They mean Body armor piercing... At least that is what one petition was trying for here in L.A. (lower alabama aka panhandle of fla) It was literally going after "jacketed" rifle rounds we see in daily hunting use...

This could be a nasty one if so!

What's sad is that the first proposal on "making schools safer" is adding resource officers and counselors to schools. What the heck would more resource officers or counselors done to prevent or minimize Newtown?

I understand the need to maintain the mental health of children, and to do so in the school that they attend, but should there not be concrete proposals on how to protect our children in that environment when someone decides to shoot the school up.

How it is acceptable to have armed security guards or on/off-duty police at malls, movie theaters, churches, government buildings, college campuses, store parking lots, street fairs, sporting events, etc., but not K-12 grade schools?

Not sure what they can really do, since there isnt a huge amount of actual AP ammo even out there, let alone I cant remember any used in a crime.

FWIW

ETA: the only thing I can see POTUS pushing is a ban on possession of AP by his above statement...Unsure if they could go after common jacketed hunting ammo, but who knows.

Perhaps this may cause a look into the handguns chambered in rifle calibers as well...Again, to soon to guess.

Please get off of this site and do not return until you have sent a message to you Senators and Representatives. Be polite and to the point.

In some circles or school districts, a resource officer is a uniformed, armed deputy...

Yes, my concern as well. Include opposition to new ammunition restrictions in your message to your Representatives and Senators.

I agree hotdogs, this could be the kicker..... Armor piercing could be so broad as to the majority of high powered rifle rounds.

Another interesting tidbit:

Congress should get rid of restrictions that prevent ATF from changing this definition, enabling ATF to ensure that firearms imported as curios or relics are actually of interest as collectibles, rather than letting these rules be used as a way to acquire fully functional and powerful military weapons.
Could this lead to heavy restrictions on C&R FFL holders?

I don't see how that one could make it. Virtually all rifle rounds go through soft body armor IIIa and under. Literally everything would be AP.

If that's how "armor piercing" is defined, we are in major trouble.

fully functional and powerful military weapons.
So welded actions and barrels on curios???
Every functioning curio or relic rifle is POWERFUL by design...

The functional part is a bad term for us to see...

The petition that went around here was only quashed when it was pointed out that nearly all rifle ammo for hunting purposes would be illegal...

At the very least perhaps no more surplus m855 or its 7.62 equivalents, at the worst

I look forward to hearing from the CDC which airborne pathogen causes gun violence.
