The thing I've noticed is that people I talk to who actually sound like they know what they're talking about seem to prefer 9mm AND .45 (not one or the other, but both) while the mall ninjas and not very experienced shooters are almost always shooting .40.

Just an observation.

Those people are also generally older and set in there ways

If people know what they are talking about then, they probably have been shooting awhile. They had their minds made up before the .40 existed, so naturally the younger people who came to shooting since then are going to be more likely to shoot .40 or 357sig or gasp..45gap vs. the older, more experienced.
BTW, These same people usually look down on anyone not firing a 1911 from my experience.

I don't let it bother me though, I'll just practice that much harder One of these days I'll be telling up and coming shooters, "stay away from that new .353whizbang, it's a solution to a non-existing problem"

Are you kidding me!? Do 4 years as a Marine Corps Marksmanship Instructor and 1 year as an Army Armorer as well as being a life long shooting enthusiast count as experience?? The .40 S&W combines the greatest attributes of both the .45 and 9mm. My question is how much longer will the other 2 continue to exist? As far as the price of ammo is concerned I don’t know where some of you purchase yours, but around here the price difference between .40 S&W and 9mm is slim to none. I may at some point own a .45 but only as a novelty piece. Personally If there were more choices available in firearms & ammo for the 10mm I would have gone that route…but 10mm options are just a little too limiting.

Piss on 'em all i love .40 i've had two and i've shot .45 & 9mm in many diff. guns, Ruger P89, S&W 645, Glock 21(which is what my .40 is[G22]), Beretta 92FS, Sh*%y A@# Haskil in .45, G17. Still like My G22. Ya'll can shoot and own what u want and so will I. I don't hate those other calibers like most of these ppl hate the .40 but i choose other than those, and i can get 15 round mags all day long and slap a +2 on it and i have a 17 rounder. In .40. Just my dollar two ninety eight.

Why the argument over which caliber? 9mm, 40, 45 357 sig, and 10 mm I would love to have them all. Each has use. All are fun to fire. I have set a modest goal of adding one new caliber a year, if wife does not kill me first (Hey it is cheaper than golf) I need the 45, 10 mm and 357 sig.
After that there is a few more revolvers I would like to mate with S&W 357 magnum my night stand weapon.

I like the 10mm answer.

Big, fast, and lots of ammo.

I been carrying my G20 concealed lately. 16 rounds of hot 10mm from DoubleTap ammo.

When I want a smaller gun I opt for the 357SIG.

I reload for both, so the practice ammo is dirt cheap.

I wonder which is better? Kimber in .45acp or Kimber in 9mm?

I have a .40S&W Glock22 that I would trade in a heartbeat for a 9mm Glock17. Anyone?

I just found the answer to .45 vs 9mm!

No, you didn't.

And, for now, lets just leave it at that.

This whole argument may have been avoided if the .41AE had made it.

40 S&W's are for people who are ashamed to be seen carrying a 9mm,But don't have what it takes to carry a .45...Col.Jeff Cooper

I hear alot of Jeff Cooper quotes.

I wonder how many rounds of 40sw he survived.

You forgot to include some of the best action pistol shooters in the world.

Actually it was necromanced in December of '04; it started in December of '02. It will soon be celebrating its sixth birthday.

Much like Pet Sematary, this one had elements of nostalgia. I miss TwoBlink and Handy. Haven't seen either for quite some time.

As for thread necromancy in general, this may be a house record.

When archaeologists three thousand years from now are picking through our digital bones, what will they find? Caliber wars and "revolver vs. semi auto" threads - and they'll marvel over the passion developed over such matters - much as we'd be puzzled to learn the ancient inhabitants of the upper Nile area spent a portion of their lives arguing over arcane and theoretical distinctions in pointy sticks.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall while that thesis is being brewed.

I have always been more accurate with 9mm and .45ACP than .40S&W.
I'm not saying that one is more accurate than the other but I guess that's just how I shoot.

I like all three rounds for how they each differ from each other.
Maybe someday I'll get a 10mm and see how I do with that caliber.
I've never fired a 10mm before . Don't know anyone who owns one. My friend is thinking about getting a Glock 29. Can't wait to fire it

Holes = Bad (big or small)

FMJ = Return Fire (.45 or 9mm)

The .40 S&W has not shown itself to be significantly superior to either the .45 ACP or the 9mm. I continually read (and hear) stories of people taking multiple hits and living. None of these calibers can match a .357 mag with the right ammo, but I would still feel comfortable with any of them. I would not, however, feel comfortable with any FMJ.

If I had to choose between the three autos, I'd take a 9mm with Federal 115gr JHP ammo. There's no miracle ammo in a semi-automatic, but the .40 S&W was a huge disappointment to me. I honestly hoped it would excel over the 10mm and be the perfect storm of the semi-auto world, just as the 125gr JHP turned out for the .357.

If you can't hit what you are aiming at with 6-7 rounds, in an extremely tense and difficult situation, is scattering more bullets than this the answer?

Where are all the bullets going that aren't hitting your bad guy? How many others are dead or wounded because 10 rounds were fired and one was a kill shot.
You always hear this...My response is a resounding YES
I will always take to advantage of more rounds.
If I can preoccupy a BG long enough to get me and my family out of a bad situation...mission accomplished.
I will worry about collateral damage and 'is he dead?' later.
I guess I'm just practical that way.
Same as I posted on the yearly 'Best bear defense' posts.
I want that bear unable to harm me....dead is just a bonus.

40 S&W is a snappier caliber than 45ACP though it has more power. I prefer 45 because it's easier to stay on target for followup shots if you have more than one BG coming at you.

Still looking that that IWB holster for my 7 1/2" 44 Magnum...
