Please work up when using heavy bullets. Suggest a 12.8g start.

Well, I just happen to own a 66-5 and shoot a lot of loads with 296 & H110through my 66-5 Smith. My biggest warning to you is do not get to low with your charge. Those slow buring magnum powders will go high pressure real quick and in a hurry if the charge is too low. You said you are loading a 180 grain bullet. If you are using W296 DO NOT start any lower than 12.8 grains or your pressures will jump high. With 296 you can go up to 13.1 with no problems. If using H110 start above 12.1 up to 12.9. I don't worry about the larger charges when using these powders. But I am wondering why you are using a 180 grain bullet? You would like the results of a 125 or 158 much better with those powders.

i'm using 180 gr. bullet because i happen to have 100 of em. i also have a couple pounds of H110, AND, i'm working up a load for around the house Black bear issues. i've got a lot of bears and lions around in the late summer and fall and my 357 is my primary "around the house" defense sidearm. i want a hard hitting, deep penetrating bullet that won't break up upon entry. i test these rounds with ballistics gel and pig bones and 180 grain wide flat nose hard cast, only prob is i can't find any wide flat nose hard cast bullets anymore, so i'm loading up some HP/XTPs in the hopes that they will perform just as well. thanks for all the input.

I use 13 grains of H-110/296 & WLP primer with either a 180 gr Nosler-HG, or 180 grain XTP. I do not see any need to push higher. No pressure signs in my revolvers, nor excessive recoil.

I really like the Nosler Partition HG, it demonstrates the best .357 Magnum expansion and penetration in all standard barrier gel tests. Most may be more familiar with it as the Winchester Partition Gold.

Teddy Bears & ***** Cats !!!

I`d be more worried `bout makin a hole ALL THE WAY THRU those big vermin with big teeth ,to heck with expansion !!!!

A hard cast 358429 will get the job done !!! & since alot of the bullet is out of the case ya can get 15grs. of H110 easy & that`s not even published max in Lymans Cast Handbook!!!

Yeah , Mr. Keith knew what he was doing !!!!

I found out an intersting fact , the 429421 & the 358429 as per Mr. Keiths specs were the same length !!!!!

thanks for the pic nate45,... have to give the P-gold's a try. i take it they perform similar to the xtps? the reason i ask, is because i found a good supply of the 180 gr. xtps. i live in the woods, and don't make it into town much, and i don't have a credit card or whatever for ordering stuff online, so i like to buy locally when i do make it into town. a buddy of mine that has a gun store found a few sources for me, including montana gold, (think they make one similar to the win partition gold) and of course hornady, anyway, i like tinkering with different stuff and plugging it into the gel. thanks for the info.

357 Max Reloading powder use?

I know an old thread but....pls update with your suggestions
Got a 10"-12" T/C Contender and bought some Hornady 180 gr XTP's.
Should be able to use those for both calibers I have 357 Max & 35 Rem.
Which powder is good to start with? etc..

I use 4227 almost exclusinvely in my Maxes. It works great and is quite accurate. 1680 and RL7 are suggested occasionally but I have not messed with them.

says: 10" barrel, 1: 18.75" twist H110 .357 mag 1.575" OAL, 180 gr

Starting load 13.0 gr 1,352 fps 36,800 CUP
Max load 13.5 gr 1,396 39,100 CUP

Probably data taken by some guy in 1960 making $2/hour with equipment that looked like it came from the set of Forbidden Planet.
