Ammo ruined by oil
Has anyone ever heard of ammo being ruined while in the chamber of the gun (such as in a home defense pistol) because the gun is too oily? I am refering to the oil making its way into the brass as ruining the powder.

Yes! Usually creeps in and ruins the primer

Yup.
Happens when you combine ammo with no primer sealant with a gun that's been over-oiled and/or improperly cleaned. Oil vaporizes and sneaks in around the primer, rendering it inert over time. For guns you keep loaded, clean & oil them, then run a dry patch through the chamber(s) and bore to remove excess oil. Dry fire the gun (except rimfires) 5-6 times to see if the action oozes more oil. If so, blow out excess with compressed air & wipe gun down.

The NRA did a study of many gun oils and cleaners. The problem is really those that have penetrants in their formulas. It is the penetrant that penetrates around the primer and brings oil with it.Often LEOs and others would spray lube directly onto the loaded cylinder and that would be the worst problem.
