^ I agree with you. Where I've got a 22" barrel I'm pretty happy with the velocity I'm getting.

And as an upside our little 7mm-08 moving at "only" 2800ish fps is we don't need expensive bonded or partitioned bullets for up close shots. 140gr SGK, 145gr BTSP/Hot Core and even the tiny 120gr Pro Hunter all have a SOLID reputation for performance out of the little 7mm-08 and it's older cousin the 7x57.
If I want bonded bullets burning up the lower atmosphere at 3400fps I have a 270 WSM that does that quite nicley |

Strangely, the only (apparent) rifle bullet "failure" (as in broken bullet not failed to kill) I've ever seen was a Remington Core-Lokt fired from a 7mm-08 Browning X-Bolt at a deer from about 40 yards. Killed the deer but no exit.
Speed... I like speed... 110gr Barnes TTSX fired at 3,300fps from 24" 7mm-08.

Brian...I like speed too...but that light, low BC bullet looses too much energy by the time it hits 300+ yards. It's not uncommon in muley country to take those shots. Now their 140 is nice...but they cost a lot more .
Kachok, I'm like you...I'm perfectly happy with the 7mm-08, and I was before ever getting it. |

I can stroke some crazy speed out of a 7mm-08 with 120s now, the 120gr Ballistic Tip is a highly regarded bullet with a respectable .417BC and you can push them to 3100-3250fps out of a 7mm-08 depending on how much tube you have. I have never used them myself but I know some very experienced guys that swear by them, of course at that kind of speed meat damage is going to nasty if you shoot them up close.

Compared to a "normal" 140gr (Hornady SP) at 2,950, which has about 1,580 at 300 and carries 1,000 to 530. That might be significant, that's up to you. Depends on your opinions on such things. As to the matter of cost, I've done the calculations many times. Given the number of shots that most of us fire with our actual hunting bullets in a given year, most of us spend under $10 more annually for the premium bullets.

Well, I don't have to wonder if the 139btsp will do the job anymore. This good three point was an uphill shot, 450 yards. It broke a rib, tore through the top of lungs and possibly liver, then oddly appears to have bounced off the spine and took another rib out on it's exit. Call BS all you want, I wouldn't believe that could have happened, but that the way it appeared to all who were hunting with me.
BTW...I'm tired this is one of two 3 pointers we hauled out, gutted, caped, etc., but it was a great day! |

7mm-08 Load Help
Fantastic shot on a great deer. I can't wait to start working up some loads for my 7-08. I'm stuck between a Hornady 139g or the 154. BC is really good on the 154 and trajectory ends up being very close to the 139 (based on realistic velocities I've been playing with).
I'll be heading west in a few weeks for a mulie hunt, unfortunately won't be taking the 7-08 as I want to practice more with it before I take longer range shots. |

Thanks. I'd check on Hornady's website as they are not making a whole list of bullets anymore. If I remember right one of the 154s was on the list.
Good luck on you're hunt. |

Nice deer I am pretty sure they still make the 154s I just bought a box of them a few months ago. For some reason my 7mm-08 did not like my Hornady bullets nearly as much as my Sierras or Noslers. My 06, 308, and 6.5x55 all LOVE SST bullets but my 7mm-08 and 270 WSM are not keen on them despite my best efforts. I want to try 139gr Interlock BTSP but I have yet to find them around here.

7mm-08 Load Help
They may have temporarily suspended them, but I've already purchased enough to cover me for awhile.

Hello. I'm just throwing an update out for any that are interested. I decided to play around a little and try some other loads I was heading out to practice with my hunting load from last year. In the process I tried some RL-17. I tried the max load (from Hornady, lower than listed from other places) with the 139btsp and it didn't shoot worth a dime. I tried the same load with some 139IBs I'd traded for and that load shot three under 1"! Go figure. I also tried the reverse, trying the same load that worked so well with 139btsp on the 139IB and the Interbond didn't like Varget almost as much as the BTSP didn't like RL-17. Sometimes reloading is an odd, unexplainable thing.
I need to play with 2000-MR more. The few loads I ran were not giving the speed suggested at near max loads and accuracy was average. I did run the old stand by IMR4064 with the 139btsp, and it was almost as accurate as varget and not quite as fast, just as I'd expected, but it is nice knowing that other powders will work if that's all I can get. |
