shot timer recommendation

I'm looking for a shot timer. I'm new to competitive shooting and currently laid off, so price is an issue. I'd like it to work with my dry fire practice if that's possible. So, what's your recommendation?

If you have a smart phone... why not "an App"

There are shot timers available via your phone to download. I think the iPhone requires the earplug to make it work but I'm not certain of that.

Typically cost around <$9 for an app (some are $0.99) but that depends on your phone and service.

If you want a dedicated stand alone shot timer... CED 7000 ($129)

I have used this Competition Electronics timer for years and have been pleased with it. We have used it for many different types of competition and self defense training and it has served us well.

I would get an app, but I can't find one for my windows 7 phone, HTC Trophy.

I'll look around and see if I can find one locally. Does Cabelas carry this kind of stuff? Might give me an excuse to go down there and stop by surplus ammo and arms on my way.

For dry fire practice, there used to be moving and par time style targets that were available for use on a computer screen.
This site still has them - http://www.rangemaster.com/rm_dry_fire.html
But this was the only one that seemed to be still working.
Matt Burkett used to have some really good ones on his old web site.
Maybe they're still floating around the web somewhere.

I just bookmarked that page, kind of a cool tool for practice. I'll mess around more with it later today.

The iphone 4 has a circuit that cuts out the mic when it senses a loud noise. So the awesome surefire app that I had on my iphone 3 doesn't work anymore other than for dry fire practice.

I have 2 CED7000 and 1 CED8000 and they are great! Check them out.

You answered your own question with "dry fire practice" and screw the shot timer. Save your money and practice draw, target acquisition, trigger pull. By the way if money is tight how do you plan on attending match's?

We have about a dozen of these at the range, and they're my favorite timer. They have useful functions like delayed start, programmable par time, shot review, etc., but unlike a lot of timers, the functions are very intuitive and easy to use.

If it isn't yellow, square, and ugly, no one would know how to use the darn thing in these parts. Even in the IPSC Canadian Nationals the ROs use the ubiquitous R.U. Ready 3000 RF Speed-Timer. I didn't know that other companies made them!
