.41 Magnum---SR 4756 powder---
I noticed in an older Speer #8 Reloading manual that SR 4756 powder gave
the top velocity for a 200gr Jacketed hp bullet out of 12 powders tested in the .41 Magnum with a 6 inch barrel. The accuracy with that powder is superb. Why isn't that powder used more for top loads ? Or maybe it is. Anyone have an idea of the pressure that load might make ? Thanks |

The accepted SAAMI max pressure for the 41 Mag is now 35,000 lbs. In the early years it was 43,500. The loads in the Speer Manual #8 reflects the max pressure limit of the time. It's been my experience with 4756 that it works best close to max limits. Considering the new lawyer approved limits doesn't even get close to the older limits, it's not of much value today. If you intend to load to the old data, make sure to start low and work up. Don't assume that it's okay. The reason the limits have been lowered across the board is because of NAME brand pistols on the market that can't handle a steady diet of full loads. I won't name the maker mostly because it usually starts an arguement.

Not as long as the barrels don't fall off. They had a problem with that happening to Redhawks at one point. They finally blamed it on the barrel thread lube. I have no idea why that would do it?

I've shot kegs of SR4756 in a variety of guns and loadings. It's my go-to powder for heavy 12 gauge and everyday working loads in revolvers. The RCBS 41-210-KT sized .410 and loaded over 10.0 grains was recommended by an old Montana cowboy gone to the happy hunting grounds. It would group into 1 hole at 25 yards in my 4 inch M57, and was my daily carry load for over 10 years in that gun. I could shoot Necco wafers with it using both hands. I used at least a keg in my .357s too; 9.0 over the RCBS 38-150-KT and the Lyman 358477 sized .358". This load fed several M27s and a couple M19s for years. It also fed numerous .38s with varying intensity loadings.

ballistic lawyers? killin' me here.......
There are better choices.
For choices I most highly recommend testing H110, W296, and AA9 (do NOT ignore AA9).
