Help with stevens 25

a friend of mine has a rifle marked stevens 25, it is not marked stevens favorite anywhere and its not listed in my bluebook, it looks to have been a rimfire 25 that someone has tried to convert to centerfire with a new firing pin. First what is it? and second, is it safe to convert to centerfire and what cartridge would be safe to shoot if any? would a 25 auto round work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Did find out the buttplate is marked stevens favorite!

Stevens made many different model rifles over the years. It's impossible to say what your friend's rifle may be without pictures and without knowing the markings on it. Chances are good, though, that if it's not a Favorite, it's a Crackshot 15.

The .25 Stevens rimfire cartridge was, for many years, very popular.

Attempts were made to convert some of these rifles to various .25 caliber rimfire cartridges.

Your firiend would need a chamber cast to see exactly what has been done to it. It could have been converted for one of the long .25 centerfires, such as the .25-25, or it could be a wildcat based on one of those, or a similar, cartridge.

When the guy bought the rifle from an older gentleman who had the rifle before, gave him a couple of 25auto rds and said this is what he shot out of it. Sounds like a chamber cast is in order.

Your Model 1894 Favorite was made prior to 1915, and is either a No.17 (24" bbl) or a No.21 Bicycle Rifle (20" bbl).

The.25 Stevens RF was developed for Stevens, as a very long/straight case - but since the actions are 100year-old cast iron, I wouldn't recommend shooting any CF rounds through one.

When the issue ammo became unobtainium, unknowledgable owners shot whatever they could stuff into the chamber, doing whatever they had to do in order to keep their gun firing.

The case is about 1.125 inches, which isn't much longer than a .22 Winchester Magnum.
