Love those fox squirrels. They were much tougher than the greys in LA, but they were good in a Squirrel/Sausage Jambalaya!

wouldn't eat the ones around here anyway. they survive by feeding from dumpsters, and other garbage picking.

I miss Big Ol' Fox Squirrels

I live and hunt in Maine, but was born and raised in Southern Michigan. I don't do much squirrel hunting any more, although we do have Grays up in this part of the country. It's not the same as plopping a big Ol' Fox squirrel out of a Hickory Tree.... I miss it.
Thanks for Sharing

Post Scrit: My dad had an Airedale that was a squirrel treeing machine.

What is the squirrel season in Indiana?

Going to visit my brother in the latter part of May in West Lafayette. Got him a Marlin 60 years ago and he still has never been hunting. Would love to take him out if the season is open.

I don't think we have fox squirrels here in Arizona but we do have Abert squirrels. They are about the size of fox squirrels though.

You'll all no doubt howl with laughter at this, but; couple years ago I was potting the gray squirrels in my suburban backyard that a neighbor was fattening up on mixed nuts. Some we fried up, some we grilled. Them tree rats was mighty tasty!

At first, we just wanted to see what they tasted like so we'd know, come the 'end times' lol. Then, we got squirrel fever. Had to stop, new neighbor in back of us, total shrew.

Nice looking MT Curs.
I have hunted Squirrel with MT Curs for years, and Coon with Treeing Walker.
But I had an acidental breeding, where my Treeing Walker Male got to my MT Cur Gyp.
One pup survived, and I raised him, he is making a Natural Coon Dog.
He is BoB Tailed, built like a MT Cur, with longer ears and a Bawl Mouth.
Fast on the track, accurate, and handles the best.
Your Right Squirrel is good to eat, I usually slow fry them.

Nice mess of squirrels

Man I wish we still had that kind of red squirrel numbers around here.

In my area of Eastern MO they have become so few I hate to shoot em. Now those skinny little, 'runnin rabbit' grays are plentiful but those buggers won't sit still long enough for a decent rifle shot. Or maybe its just my eyes getting too old, and my reflexes getting too slow

What do you do with them ?

Roast em like chicken. Many cooks fry em. Fox squirrel have much more meat than blacks/greys.

Sat last Saturday morning in the stand and at first light saw movement on the feeder. From 90yds away I could here crunching and scrabbling around. It got light enough to see and there he was, the biggest fox squirrel I have ever seen in my life. He'd jump around and shake the whole wooden feeder, dern thing was bigger than any house cat I've ever seen. I don't eat squirrel and just enjoy watching them run around but Frankensquirrel would have fed a family of 5 with leftovers.

Nice looking bunch of treerats.

I've only had squirrel pan fried with gravy. It was kind of tough but tasty. My step dad's an only WV mountain man and he swears by pressure cooking them first to make it tender. Do any of you pressure cook them first?

So, I would like to pick squirrel hunting brain.

My son is 9, and has a nice 10/22 to shoot around with. I like food, and I like new food, and squirrels kinda make me think cornish mammal hen, so I am thinking of taking him out for them sometime.

My question... What kind of squirrels are prominent in the SW Idaho area? I know of a few places to go where I have seen them around, outside of Boise, and I am thinking they are fox squirrels, but I have never thought of them in this way before, so never bothered to find out.

Any hints, thoughts, advice?

Fox squirrels are usually larger in size...and are red/auburn in color....greys are ... well... grey in color.
