Even within a givin price range, "best" is still vague and very subjective. I will say that Colt was only the "best" when they were the only commercially available 1911 around! Things have changed considerably over the last few decades.

Ya pays ya money an takes ya chances. The only one I ever bought that didn't work was a Kimber, 3 Colts and a Springfield all worked right out of the box. Reputation don't mean a thing if it don't work.

DGLudwig - oh, man - a dagger through my heart! I am fond of my clunky old Llama IXA .45. It rattles like an anchor chain and stripped it looks like it was "machined" by a hammer and chisel, but the old nag will shoot anything I feed it and it is surprisingly accurate. Big beefy wood grips with deep checkering. Mebbe a gun only a mother could love, but I won't part with it.

Call me crazy, but....
I like the Remington R1 for some reason. I've had friends (one being
a pawn shop co-owner) who says they don't hold value. But, what does everyone else think?

Generally speaking, it is my opionion, the lowest grade of most products, whether 1911s, rifles, cars, boats etc... loose the most % of value the fastest. As time passes the market for the lower quality dissappears and only the high quality ones retain some market value. Of course there are bound to be exceptions.
As the old saying goes " The race is not always won by the swift, or the battle by the strong. But that's how the smart money goes."

I have a Sig XO and a Remmy R1 enhanced. Both cost me less than 600 bucks. Both are more accurate than I'll ever be... also more reliable than I'll ever be.
...the only 1911 I had that wasn't reliable was... a Kimber (shocking right). Kimber also told me to keep feeding the stupid thing ammo because it wasn't broken in before shipping it to them. I keep laughing every time I go to a gun store and ask for a good 1911 and someone recommends me a Kimber. And the sad thing is that I'm not the only one, I have two friends with bad Kimbers. I don't know what's the "best" 1911, to be honest. If it goes "bang" reliably, it's already very good, and if it's accurate at 15-20 yards, it's excellent. Maybe someone who is a match grade shooter can discern between a 2500 dollar piece of jewelry and a 600 buck brick, but I can't. ...but definitely +1 on Wilson and Chip Mccormick mags. This is my first post on the firing line forum. Looks like a great place to chat. I have a Kimber stainless gold match that has had one break in jam and thats all out of 2700 rds. It shoots great and looks great. My wife put my budget at $1300 and Im very happy with the kimber.

Welcome to The Firing Line, kimbers rule. How accurate is your Kimber?

My best group with it was from 12 yrds resting on a tree a few weeks ago. It put 8 rds into one hole. My father in law still thinks i shot the last 5 over the target so I wouldnt mess up the group! LOL. Its more accurate than I ever expected it to be.
