You'll get longer answers from other members in a few minutes....

The short answer is - NO, do not bring a handgun into NYS, its a felony for non residents, unless they are in the state for a sanctioned competition.

NYS does not recognize permits from other states, and federal transport regs do not apply since you are not allowed to possess a handgun in the destination state - NY

this an answer from another forum:
F.O.P.A. covers interstate travel.
Basically guns are in a locked case, (soft case with luggage lock on zipper is ok) unloaded, ammo seperate from firearms, and guns not within reach.
Ok now your safe to go from one place where you are legal to posess these weapons to another place which you are allowed to posess the same weapons.
KY doesn't have a blacklist of firearms the state does not trust it's citizens to own.
NY does, including magazine bans over 7 rnds.
So while FOPA covers interstate travel (or passing through), sleeping over in NY, NJ, CT., Ma., could ruine your life.
Their are exceptions, like traveling to S&W in MA. to compete in an I.D.P.A. competition.
then make sure you don't have any gun on their prohibited list, and magazines that comply with their laws. Same goes for N.Y. with the caveat that you have documentation of competition and the dates, and confirmation of your registering for the event.
Going to NY State to stop other than for gas or food, or on Vacation or business and bringing any kind of gun I would advise against it. But I'm not a legal eagle.
and if you plan on going anywhere inside NY city, forget it, worse than NY state, and not worth the risk.
I traveled from CT to KY with firearms utilizing FOPA, and even then made the decision to not go the most direct route over the GW bridge through NY,NY, and went the long way, through NY State.

What you (or the person who offered this advice) are overlooking is that the FOPA requires that your possession of the firearm must be legal in the state where you begin the trip AND in the state where the trip will end. If you don't satisfy both of those, the FOPA does not apply to any part of your trip.

You will not be traveling through New York, you will be traveling TO New York. As has been posted, non-residents simply cannot bring handguns into New York State (except for the narrow exceptions referred to above -- which do NOT include self-defense). Never mind sleeping over in NY -- if you even cross the border into NY state with a handgun, you will be committing a felony.

Leave the gun at home -- or find a way to check it in PA while you're in NY, and pick it up on the way home.

travel & guns....

I'd highly suggest buying a travel guide(gun laws) or checking a few websites before you hit the road.
A few bucks and time may save you a lot of hassles later....
See www.mylegalheat.com www.knifelawsonline.com www.handgunlaw.us www.gunlawguide.com .
Keep in mind that gun & use of force laws or city ordinances may change.
Not all cops or state troopers you might encounter may be "cool" or "understanding".
They deal with drug runners and gun smugglers all the time.
