M1A sock touch-up help..

Hi all,

I have an M1A that has some wear on the stock. Anyone have any tips or advice on how to touch-up the stock? (the sock is fine - love those typos)

I am aware of the linseed oil procedures, but have no clue as to what the factory uses on their stocks. (M1A is factory standard)

Pick a spot and swab on alcohol with a Q tip. If it removes the finish, it is varnish. Swab on lacquer thinner. If it removes the finish, it is lacquer. True oil finishes are rare, but almost anything can be touched up with Birchwood Casey's stock kit. Some gunsmiths use a French oil finish. There are several stock finishing and touch up techniques listed in gunsmithing books and stockmaking books.An oil finish will continue to oxidize and sink into the wood, requiring touch ups at intervals.
