What would be the optimum barrel length for slugs and maybe 00 or 000 buckshot? I know that some companies offer slug barrels in anywhere from 20" to 24" but which would be the best? I guess part of what I'm asking is what would the be best powder burn length?

Length isn't all that critical in regard to pattern and velocity. It is a factor in good balance and handling.

There's no tablet of stone writ with the right answer here.
Try a few and see what works for you. Presently, the two HD/ hunting 870s here have 18 and 20" bbls, and work well for me with peep sights.
